Question Jeremy Mayfield

Mayfield replaces Attwood in the Dodge dealers 19 car. Anyone have the scoop on him? I've heard of him before, but never seen him drive. I got into the Nascar thing this year because Dodge is back...Now I'm hooked on every aspect.

Lets see, what can we say about him.
He drove for Mobil One oil this year till he got fired.
He has had glimmer of hopes, and has won a couple of races.
What he will bring to Evernham, we don't know yet.
Hopefully he learned some stuff from Rusty and is bringing that along with him.

Mayfield is another guy that got to Winston Cup by way of Nashville(Just like Atwood). A friend knows both very well, his accessment; Atwood has more native talent but Mayfield knows the mechanical aspects of the race car much, much better. Maybe Evernham believes he needs knowledge more than native talent potential. But Mayfield has an ego problem, is accustomed to being the star of the show and will probably not be as long as Elliot is there(2002 is last year). Mayfield is not a team player.

One of the rumors floating around here is Mayfield will become the main player after Elliot leaves, Atwood will return to Evernham in 2003. Atwood is still under personal services contract to Evernham, is going to Ultra Motorsports because Evernham is supplying cars and engines to Ultra in 2002 and is continuing to pay Atwood just as he is part of Evernham team. Ultra still must get sponsorship but only for the remaining costs; housing, crew, travel expense, racing expenses, etc.

Damn, it gets confusing!

You know he's starting to sound a bit like Dale Earnhardt...knowledge of car aspects, has an ego and is accustomed to being the star of the show.
Sounds like a legend in the making here guys.

If he's pretty aggressive, maybe he is just what Dodge needs...a T.Stuart/D.Earnhardt prototype. Guess we'll see.

Michael

Thanks guys!

The rumors have been floating around the Nascar circuit for several months. Elliot will definitely be in the seat for the year 2002. After then, his contract expires with Evernham. Hey, look at it this way:
1. Evernham bought the basis for his team from Elliot in 2000. At the end of 2002, Evernham will have paid Elliot in full for the team, equipment, buildings, etc.
2. Elliot will be about 47 years of age in 2002. Been racing full time about 30 years. He might want to go back to Dawsonville, shoot some pool at the pool hall, go fishing and spend time with his family in peace, without the constant demands of sponsors, racing and fans. In most parts of the country these guys can't even go out to dinner in peace or go the local store to buy a six pack without police protection(almost).
3. He probably has enough money to keep beans on the table for as long as he need it.
4. He has recently gotten back into local dirt late model racing(back to his roots). I know he has said how much fun it was for him to do it and wants to do it a whole lot more in the future. Hope he does, maybe he will return that wheel he borrowed from me 30 years ago, don't care about the tire, it was worn out anyway.
5. Bill Elliot may be the first of several big names retiring in the next 2-3 years.
