Angry Crank pulley holes NOT lining up?

I'm trying to put my lower pulley on and the holes to the balancer are not lining up. This is a 440 cast crank motor. Can I oval the 1 hole out a bit?

Please don't take this as an insult, but, did you try rotating one hole at a time, sometimes this works.

I have usually just used 5 of the 6 bolts. The cast and forged pullies are a little diff for the bolt pattern. You can oval the one hole.

look at one of the holes. it should be a little larger than the rest. that pulley should only go on one way.that hole is suppose to help you alighen the pulley.

I just went through the same problem with my new torque converter. I played with it for an hour, I finally took it back to the shop, and damn, they got the bolts in, but you have to put a certain one in first. I ended up putting the engine in without the trans because I had to get the hoist back. I think aligning the bolts with the engine in, is going to be a real headache.

cast and forged cranks use differant pulleys. you can oval one hole to make it fit.

I think you will find that is is a year difference in the pulleys. They changed from a symetrical pattern to a non symetrical (2 holes wider apart than the rest). The flex plate problem is actually simple if the converter has a drain plug. There is a small hole in the plate toward the center. It is placed opposite (180deg.) of the drain plug.

Prior to '72 the pulley bolt pattern was asymmetric, starting in '72 they went to a symmetrical pattern. Big block, small block, forged, cast, all were symmetric in '72 and later.
