360 ci or Less Any 4-bbl (Chevy Rule)
Another chevy rule, they won't give us anything for an overbore. What is the best combo,.030 318 bore with a turned down main 360 crank-359ci ? We could run a 4-bbl, alum.heads and intake ,porting allowed , any camshaft ,any comp. Or would we be better off to go .030 over 360 or even .060 over 340 with 3.580 crank or even up to a 4.00 stroke (scat) but would have to use 1-11/16 2-bbl. No min weight(3000) , McCreary 265 on 8" wheels,3/8 dirt with banking,6.33 to 6.50 , 7200-7800 rpm. Would the scat shaft handle it on a 2-bbl? Can the 318 .030 cylinder wall take the 4-bbl over load? What about the turned down 360 mains? What about a .030 over 340 (4.070) with the 3.450 MP crank like you guys are talking about, which would come up 359ci?Would the big bore short stroke work well only with the 4-bbl? Do 2-bbl's need extra stroke to make good power? Will the 3.940(.030over 318)cause some valve shrouding?Could notch the block like the 273's with 340 heads . We would run two tracks ,one allows 4-bbl"s the other only 2-bbl"s. We'll need some help on this one, thanks

Any Claimer Rules?
If there are claimer rules, then you probably want to go the cheapest route. I'm not a dirt tracker but have a friend that runs UMP-type modifieds (Shivy stuff) and I'm familiar with his combo.
I think I'd run a 360 with +.030" overbore and maybe destroke the crank slightly (3.52") to get under the 360" rule. How accurately can they measure the displacement? You could have the rod journals offset ground to destroke the crank. I know that the Archer Bros. used Shivy rod journal sizes (Ø2.00") on their Dodge Trans-Am engines and used Shivy-type rods and pins. Their cranks even had a Shivy flange for the flywheel. As a result, I didn't buy much of their stuff when Dodge pulled out and they switched to the Pherds. I'd try the Edelbrock heads with the Victor 340 intake for the 4bbl class. For the 2bbl class, you will need smaller runners and maybe tall spacers under the carb for more plenum volume. My friend is running cams around 260°@.050" and .550" lift on the Shivy. He is running methanol on his combo. He claims about 8% more power with methanol over gasoline based on dyno testin |

If they allow full ported aluminum heads, are you sure you want to jump into this class at all? And if they allow those kind of modifications, I'm not sure any stock Mopar block will stand the strain even with 8" tires. A good 358" Mopar with the modifications you are talking about can get to the 720HP and up range real quick with a 4 barrel, close to 600HP with a 500CFM 2 barrel. Not trying to be negative but I would think long and hard before jumping in.
If you are sure you want to jump in, I would look for a used Nascar Supertruck engine. The old obsolete 15 degree wedge engines can be bought for about $12K when you can find them. They are pure race engines and will stand the strain that your rules allow. |

I personally would stay away from the 360 block strictly because of the bearing size, the 340 has a smaller journal therefore bearing speed would be less. I would choose the longer of the stroke, to help fill the cylinders better with the two barrel. I run a 359 - 4.125 r-3 with a 3.38 throw on the crank. we run a two barrel on a half mile track and it does'nt seem to have the torque that the 3.50" chevy's do. When we go to the 3/8's mile and run a 4 barrel we leave them in the dust. Stay away from the 318, this smal;l boresize will shroud the valves, and take away the advantage that the 18 deg head will give you over the others.
600hpfrom a two barrel? thats quite impressive. |
