Cool 5 speed behind a big block?

Any reason why a 5 speed truck tranny couldn't live behind a mild 400?

Sure would be nice to have 3.91's or 4.10's and have an overdrive for cruising.

Thumbs up

some of the 400's don't have a hole in the crank to install a pilot bearing. Other wise that would be a nice set up. Lake wood makes a bellhousing to do just that. I am still thinking that I would like to do the same thing when I finally get the old 400 stroker crank. My 400 dose not have the right hole. Let us know how it works out!!

Well heres the scoop, the NV(new venture)4500 or 3500 is whats used in the dodge trucks, most are 4wd so their out, youll need one from a 2wd,most 3/4t or bigger trucks have a way too low of first gear so their out,so your really looking at a NV3500 which came in small block 2wd's,be careful some have a granny although most dont(1995-1996)you wont need a bellhousing as its 1 piece with the trans, you will need to fab a trans mount and a longer driveshaft as the NV is has a stubby output, itll fit in most chassis's,dont expect the stock shifter to work in anything and dont expect to BANG gears, although it will shift quickly and smoothly not like truck trannies of the 70s and 80s,all in all I like the swap because it has great gear ratios, but be forewarned the NV3500 is marginal behind a hot BB,I wont put it behind one but its great behind mild and almost wild smallblocks.............PRO.....

Thanks, you guys. That gives me a couple of things to think about.

I wasn't sure how they rated in the strength department. I haven't heard much about them (good or bad).
