First off,I'm going to assume that the cam is installed and that TDC lines up correctly.I have this same cam in a 383 in my Dart. Now I run the race electronic dist.but you'll be OK with vacuum advance. You need to install a timing tape on the balancer, leave the vacuum advance disconnected and bring the engine up to 2500 rpm. Then set the timing to between 34-38 degrees. Then reconnect the advance.

I know this may sound strange but, I once changed the cam in my 6 pack Superbird and found that the keyway in the crank had sheared and the balancer hammered away at the crank causing a "wedge" type wear situation. You could time the engine, drive around the block and the timing would be 50 degrees off! We got a new keyway and damper and it "fixed" the problem. It's something to check. I'd set the timing to where it run best and starts well for the initial with a max of 34 degrees without the Vacuum advance connected.
