Default spool/lsd/suregrip/locker

what are the differences between all these??? i see some people suggest one while others suggest another... does it matter that much? if both tires spin... both tires spin right :P .
what are the benefits/disadvantages between these various types??

thanks for educating me!!!

alright.. it's the way that they spin. Sure grips will send the power to both wheels when in good condition. when they wear out, the power will be sent to the tire with the least amount of traction. The clutch type can be rebuilt really easily. the cone type isn't supposed to be rebuilt, but it can be.

Lockers send the power to both wheels all the time, no matter what. this is great for a drag strip, but is bad for the street. turning, both tires stay locked, and it turns into a really jerky sort of movement. not fun.

Track loks are supposed to send power to the tire with the most traction. this is great in slippery conditions. such as mud. also is going to work great on the street.

mini spools are a weaker, cheaper version of a spool that is going to work in conjunction with your open diff. there are much better solutions out there.

if you want to turn, and go fast, get a sure grip, posi, lock right, what ever you want to call it.

if it's a strip only car, get a spool, and be confident that the traction is going to be there everytime you need it.

741's aren't a prefered case. it's definately going to be the weak point

generally 489's were cone, and 742 were clutch. But, don't let that be your guide line. The units will swap within the cases.

dewme5
had read somewhere that the posi from any of the three
were interchangeable if you change bearings also and that
you could buy a 741 for alot less. and it sounds like the
clutch type is prefered.
thanks

i know the 742 and 489 swap. I would be sure the 741 would be the same. the weakness of the 741 comes from the pinion size.

741 and 657 1-3/8"
742 1-3/4"
489 1-7/8" tapered

quote from the mopar chassis manual
"NOTE: we do not recommend the 1-3/8" stem units for high performance applications and, therefore, do not carry axle ratios for these specific 8-3/4" units."

the clutch type is prefered becuase it is considered rebuildable. the cone type is "not rebuildable" according to mopar, but it can be done.
