Well rebuilding my engine was and will be a double-edged sword for years to come! We decided to pull my freshly rebuilt motor out of my 77 powerwagon and put that engine in my dart and run a Mopar Performance Crate engine in my truck instead!?This way i have all the time to play around with this engine! Now i have some questions!?
1)what 360 crate should i get? 380hp or 300hp? 2)what are the price ranges!? 3)iplan on using this truck more for street then 4x4 plus i have 3.73 rears and a 4-speed so gearing isn't a problem 4)Where can i find these engines the cheapest? 5)What else is required to install these engines{(such as carbs, etc) Is there anyother info i should know before purchising one of these engines!? |

The 380 crate is around $3500 in the Summit Mail order mag. Thats about the lowest I have seen the 380/360. The lowest I have seen the 300hp is $3000. I will be calling Koller Dodge and Mancine Racing to see if I can get a better deal. Mancini 380/360 $3695 300/360 $2995. Koller Dodge says everything is 25 percent off all parts in the mopar performance catalog. But I don't think this is true becase I think there crate engines are running the same price as the Mopar catalog. 380/360 $3599 and the 300/360 $2999. Mopar says to use a 750 holley on the 380 crate. I'm not sure on the 300/360. You have to add headers and the carb I think thats about it. I'm not sure if it comes with a fuel pump. You have to use a different Flywheel because the engine is externally balanced. I'm going with the 380/360 crate in my sreet rod because 300 hp isn't enough. What you get is up to you.

That 380 hp eng. has sooooome power. For the truck it my not have the torque dowm low to move it nice. Its the tire size your running that has me wondering. Also the weight of the truck as well.
The 300hp eng. has it down low. There "Magnum" eng's, so you'll need the kit to balance the torque converter & a balancer up front. No fuel pump. Acceries & water pump, etc. come off the old eng. For the truck, a spread bore carb would be nice. With the weight I think it might be, (heavy) A smaller carb than 750 may very well yeild better response on the throttle, and help with the gas consuption. Although I don't think you care about that. |

I'm not so much worried about that much except will it bolt to my 4-speed truck trans and will i need a different flywheel or what!
I will run a set of dyno-max cerma-coat 1 5/8 headers to start with full 2 1/2" exhalst this shouldn't restrict flow too much!? And i will run a 750 edelbrock carb! |

The block will bolt up. The crank needs to have the hole drilled in the back of it for the bushing.
The flywheel for the create eng. is for a "Magnum" balanced eng. Not the older style Commando that your used to seeing. A new unit is in order. The 2 1/2 exhaust is a very good dia. to use. Use GOOD mufflers.(hi CFM rating) |

The crank should be drilled already.

I bought the 300/360 crate motor and although its not yet in my car, I did have it dynoed at Ray Bartons. It's just my preference to dyno my motors before I put them in the car. It made 297 hp @ 5000 and 411 lb. ft. at 2900 (Wow!) I used the 340 hipo cast iron manifolds on the dyno also. It idles smooth but pulls hard with the roller cam. THe specs say a 750 Holley but it didn't like it. Secondaries were cycling (on the dyno). Put on a new 600 and it ripped! Jetting was good right out of the box.

Have had the 360/380 in my cuda for a year and a half now. I use the new 800cfm edelbrock, just adjusted the idle jet springs for off the line pull. The motor comes with an ignition set, but you use the old fuel pump. The tranny will bolt right up, it's drilled for all mopar sb chassis, but you should get a new flywheel. Also, schumaker's engine tiedown rod, 'cause she'll rip your motor mounts.
I initially had 2:73 gears and 215/60-14 tires. The 360/380 don't like that, so I went to 3:23's ,and now she rips. If you have 15 inch tires, go for the 3:55 rear gear. BTW , set timing at 2500 rpm at 36-37 degrees. No pinging at all on 93 octaneand it starts up faster than the family sedan. |
