just took the carrier out of my 69 road runner this week to check things out ive raced just about every weekend last season and hearing you guys war stories i got nervous so thats why i pulled it out and to my dismay there was nothing wrong no chiped teeth or nothing i would pass along some things that worked for me use the 742 case it takes a wider pinion bearing than the 489 i also use steel caps, also the yoke i use is bigger than the dana 60, the car runs 9.60sat almost 140mph 60footers are 136,with 430gears i hope this helps

I have a 8 3/4 and agree with you that it is tough. I have found that you need to get your clearances pretty tight and it will last well. When I put the steel caps on mine, I set the backlash by tightening the one side to get zero backlash and then spread the case to .008. This was very tough to do. All the others that I have set up with the stock caps spread pretty easy. Mine has quite a few passes on it and no breakage, but I now have a brake on it, and dont know how it will last with it. Do you have a t brake on yours?

Hey there Birdistheword! Is your runner street driven or strip only? It seems pretty kwik to be streetable, but here's why I ask. I'd like to run a T-brake in my Cuda but have been told it's not good on the street, but no one can tell me why! Also do you use a spool or locker? I have 4.30 with spool for the strip-it works great- and a 3.23 posi for the street. Thanks for the help..djs

You can use it. The companies say "Not for street use" because you can get people that want to put one in a 17 sec slant 6 car just to be cool. If you are going to put it in a "limited" use street car (READ-weekend warrior) that is fast for a street car (solid 11s and faster) you will be fine.

What's wrong with a brake in a 17 second Slant car? I had to have something to hook the delay box to!
