Default Gear change

How much should it cost to switch my 3:55 to 3:92?

Will this have a bad effect on my emissions or driveablity?

Besides the ring and pinion is there anything else that will need to be changed out?

Thanks

Couple questions need to be answered for cost? Do you have a 2x4 or 4x4? If you have a 2x4- cost should be about $400-600 at a good shop, if you have a 4x4, you have to change the front gears also and that costs more.

Also, if you have a 4x4 and run the 31" tires, I would go with a 4.10. My SLT suffers from the peg leg 3.55 also and since I run 31" tires (stock were 235.75-15), the rear axle ratio with 4.10s will turn out to be about a 3.94.

While you are delving into the rear end, get a positraction unit or gear locker installed also.

Do you have a brand/part number you recommend for the positraction?

I have a 4x2 with stock size tires

Thanks

A 2x4 is probably good with 3.92s however if you plan on going with 20" wheels, etc, get the 4.10s.

A lot of the Ram guys go with the Dana Spicer Trac Lok from 4wheelparts.com, goes for about $150. A good set of gears goes for about the same from the same place. The remaining cost is labor. With a positraction, you can lay two black strips of roasted rubber instead of one.

Will the speedometer be off after the gear change? If so, how do I correct it?

Also, which rear end do I have?

Thanks

Speedometer won't be off b/c of a gear change, if you put taller tires (20" rims and some perform. rubber), it might change a little but nothing much noticeable.

If you have 3.55s and a 318, you have the Chrysler 8.25" rear end. Here's a link for the Dana Spicer Trak Lock.

BTW, just a personal opinion but a lowered 2WD with the R/T wheels would be really cool. I have a 4x4 and can't really (or don't want to) lower this one but if I had a 2x4, I'd drop it with a Hotchkis kit for a more aggressive appearance.

Don't forget a good install kit, will have all the bearings, etc for the gear swap
