Location Of "h" Pipe
HERE'E ANOTHER ONE FELLAS. WHERE IS THE BEST LOCATION FOR AN "H" PIPE? IS IT BEFORE OR AFTER THE MUFFLERS? HOW FAR AWAY FROM THE MUFFLERS AND DO YOU USE THE SAME SIZE PIPE AS YOU DID ON YOUR EXHAUST?
THANKS AGAIN AND HAVE A HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!! ROLAND |

Simple. 12-18 inchs after the collector, not rearward of the trans tailshaft. Mufflers placed after the "H" pipe, before the rear axle.
If clearance is a problem with mufflers, place rearward rear axle with as much room for pipes after the muffler. 12-18 inch if possible. The "H" pipe should be @ least 2 inch in dia. when it conects side to side. I have read that pipe after the muffler helps in street app's. Anybody else here this? |

I was always told a good rule for placing the H pipe is to paint with spray paint your pipes in that 12-18" or so after the collector and start the car up and the first place where the paint starts to burn off is the best place for it.
Now how sceintific or even the reason for this rule is I don't know maybe someone else can shed more on light on this rule either good or bad! |

as close as possible to the exhaust ports after all the tubes meet.

Lots of contraversy on this issue, but Ive read that the best size of the x over is to be equal to the pipes used or header collector size.Test have provein this creates the greatest torque.Additionally the H pipe creares the poorest performance gain when compared to the x pipe.(read the text at boylework.com)for the exhaust pipe work compareisons and the results in mph,60 foots and 1/4 mile ets.The reason they use the paint trick is to see were the temperature loss is occurring in the pipe.At thiis point the gas volume starts to reduce(shrinkage)from cooling effects. Therefore the x over is seen as a larger pipe to the shrinking gases. Each engine based on size (cubic inches) will react differently to were the x over will go, additionally the pipe size will also move the installation point based on temperature losses so the paint trick is probably a reasonable way to get best results for each cars variables.
