Thumbs up update on a old post..I bumped my head now it's your turn

Here is what i found, after my last time out i ran a 7.07@97.75...better but still not right... so i took the car home and stuffed in the corner again... Then i thought i should at lease drain the fuel out and put it in my other car.. I had put in 15 gallons of race fuel and made 22 1/8 mile passes, so i should of have a little gas in the tank left over.. Well i put the fuel line lose at the pump and NOTHING came out....So i pulled the drain plug out from the bottom of the sump and oooohhhhhhhhmyyy!! i got 11 gallons of fuel ....Think about this 4 gallons and 22 1/8 passes!! I pulled the fuel filters (two of them) and they where full of rust....I never checked the tank or fuel filters because it was all new parts with less than 30 mile on them...I didnt put this together, i got it this way from a friend... I pulled the tank and looked inside and it was full of rust.. I do have a fuel presure gage and it never did work right... one time it would read 14 psi and the next time it would read 7 psi...i would turn the pump off and it would read 4 1/2 psi turned off!! so i never really looked at it because i knew it was reading wrong.. I guess the moral of the story is even if it looks new it doesn't mean a thing..Our track here opens back up jan 9, so we will see what it will do with a new cell, filters and fuel gage and most important fuel to the carb...Lee..

The rust could have been in the fuel itself. If you got fuel not too long after the tanker filled the tank, all the crap at the bottom of the underground tank is stirred up and floating around. You could have pumped all this crap into your fuel cell. I never fill up at a station, with the daily driver or any car where the fueling truck is either in the station, or just leaving. Not a good idea.

Just my 2¢

No it was the fuel tank itself... it looked like the inside of a old battle ship..:

Lee, glad you found the problem! Are you going to try the cam that you thought was giving you trouble, once you repair the fuel system? It was a Mopar 557 I think??......djs

I ran into a similar problem late this year(well 2001). I hadn't run my car much at all due to I was building a new garage and that kept me from racing this year as it was being paid out of my race car budget.Anyway, the foam in my fuel cell came apart and went thru the entire fuel system.Ruined a Holley blue pump, and got into the carb too. What a mess!! I had to install a new cell and pump, and cleaned the rest of the system out.Lee, keep us posted on what is up.

I have heard that race fuel is the cause. This cell's foam lasted almost 8 years,so I really cannot complain.

Default up date

Up date...i got to the track today.....numbers as follows.. 7.01@98.38 60 foot 1.58 The fuel system fix did help some, old numbers where 7.07@ 97 60 foot was 1.61.....The motor felt good mid range and top end... but felt weak on the leave..The convertor seems too tight...it's a 10 inch JW around 3600 flash..... I feel the 60 foot should be round 1.49 .. That would net me two tenths et in the 1/8 or 6.80s.....I would be happy with 6.80s, looks like i would need a 9 inch or maybe 8 inch that would stall around 4200 4400 to get it done....what do you guys think...........Lee...... Oh yes on my timing...i had the timing set at 44 deg..thats where it ran the best...well it's NOT at 44 deg it's at 38 deg .. My sears timing light was off 6 deg.. we checked it against a snap on lite and that was the difference.. so don't buy a Sears timing light.........Lee...

Hi Lee..its been a while, but I finally made some 1/4 mile passes at desoto...I had ignition problems a few weeks ago, and had to buy a MSD 7AL3 box..I figured i would need it , so I got the good one...

...still tuning, but went 10.061 at 130 off the trailer...running with #92 jets....

the 1/8 mile time was 6.43 at 108, with a 1.45 60'(footbraking and launch @2000RPM)

Then 1/8 mile racing started, and wound up running #90 jets, and went 6.300 at 109.5MPH with a 1.41 60;...I would think thats close to a 9.90 run...not too bad for a flat tappet motor.. I think with a brake and the right converter(this one is a 10" coan that stalls around 4200 rpm), itll run 9.70 easy with a good tune up...then its NOS time.. Ill put a 175 shot on it and see what happens..
