Need Help! I was wondering if this 8 3/4 Duster Rear end is worth buying!
Hello everyone. I am restoring a 1970 Dodge Swinger and I want to upgrade the rear end from 7 1/4 to an 8 3/4. I have located this rear end: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/aw-cg...ndexURL=0&rd=1 please check it out and tell me if it is worth buying. I need to know by 6 a.m. tonight. It has been redrilled to fit the big bolt pattern. It's from an A body Duster and thats exactly what I need. Please let me know what you guys think. I'm kinda on a dead line...

right now, it's $255 and that's without a chunk. I would say it's not worth it. $350 for a good unit with working posi, and gears you want, would be worth it. I paid $325 for mine when I got it, it was an A-body rear, moser axles, green bearings, 4.56's on a spool, 489 center section. That was a decent deal.
you can pull a b or c body rear complete from a junk yard for about $100 - 150. and just shorten and respline the stock axles (already 4.5 pattern) for less money and get the center section. Or, you can get some after market axles to put in it after its shortened, and still pay less then if you get that rear for $255 without a center. |

So very true. I never looked at it that way. There are so many rear ends at a local junk yard and I have tons of friends that have parts and know people who have rear ends. I'll turn this one down because I'm sure I can find an A body rear end 8 3/4 for less then that. Plus I'd have to pay for shipping which would be an arm and a leg because that rear end is in Alabama. Thanks again for your thoughts.

Certain vans had them too, and if your lucky maybe you could find one with a posi and 3:90 gears. That's how I found my 8 3/4. As far as new shafts go you may want to check prices as they can be costly. I'm presently having a dana 60 shortened and the axles and bearing and what not are costing me around $800.00 Canadian, that's without the machine shop labour, divide that by 1.6 for an approx US price. I think the best deal would be a complete unit, no fuss - just install. One thing about e-bay is that there's always another similar item available quite soon so keep watching and know your prices. Another option would be to check "parts for sale" listings on sites like this and or other mopar sites, or post a parts wanted listing. Hope this helps.

Yeah true, I only have one 1 hour and 38 minutes to go. I'm probably not going to buy it. I'll just look around and try to find a rear end with a differential with gears and the whole thing. The only thing is that if I do find an A body 8 3/4 i'm going to have to get it redrilled for the Big Bolt Pattern which will cost 80 bucks an axel . So thats 160 right there that has been saved. True though there are so many axels and rear ends out there, I'll just wait and look around. I mean I haven't even checked out my local junk yard.

Cuda! I've owned two, and both with 4 1/2" bolt circles. I'm not sure which years had them, might be something worth checking into.

Cuda4play, where is your local junk yard? Im in Santa Ana, and these yards are dry, dry, dry...I would suggest a truck wrecking yard for an 8 3/4 out of a van. They are less likely to be gutted. As for an A-body width, good luck.

Good Move
I just sold one on Ebay with a 489 chunk, $285
Had no gear set or springs. I think passing was a good move Be careful on Ebay, do your research and bid accordingly, I've seen lots of parts sell for higher than new price. I use Summit and Jegs for price comparisoms. Don |

What Don say's is true, what I do is watch prices for awhile so you know when a good deal does come along! One thing about e-bay is anything good very rarely goes for cheap so expect to pay market value plus shipping! I still suggest placing an ad and reading the 4-sale ad's on this and similar web site's and see what you can find. It's winter anyway give yourself some time - you'll find one!!

DEWME5,
A replacement hood alone is $15,000. If you want a Viper I would recommend looking over on the Viper classfieds. You can get a"like new" 97 in the neighborhood of $50-55,000. Some of them even have a transferrable warranty. Every thing about a Viper is $$$$. They are a class act though! I almost bought one last year...a 97 Blue with white stripes, 4,000 miles for $53,000. I'm still kicking myself. I decided to buy my BB Duster instead. I love my Duster too...I definately would NOT buy one that had been stolen/stripped/recovered. JMHO! DusterJim |
