Question Newbie needs 383 advise

I dont own a Mopar , but I may be getting a 383 4spd Roadrunner. Low mile but not sure what year. 70-71 perhaps Anyways how good is the 383 Motor? How about the 4spd and the rear end? Dana 60 is it? With a 125 shot would it dip high 12's?

Ive owned nothing but Chevy's but Im not going to turn down free car and a chance to wrench on a Plymouth. TIA

The 383 is a very good eng. It is a short stroke big block that in my opinion is about the tuffest eng chrysler built. As for the dana spicer 60 even the chevy people ought to know about them they are similar to 12 bolt GM and will take alot of abuse.Give the car a fair chance and you will love it.

The 383 was and is a great motor, same bore as a BB Chev and a shorter stroke than a SB Chev. The A833 tranny was designed to take repeated lauches with a Hemi hooked to it as was the Dana 60. The Dana was std equipment on Hemi and 6-pak Std tran cars. Should make a fast and extremely durable rig.

With minimal upgrades you can spin a 383 to 6G and never have a worry. It is one tough motor. That why I got one

Angry small vent

What I wanna know is, how does a Chevy fan run across a free roadrunner w/383, but even if I could FIND a roadrunner it would cost me 3 arms, 2 legs, and maybe some major organs?!!!! Sound jealous? You bet. Good luck and have a blast with it!!!

You'll enjoy the 383 and you'll also like how simple it is to build and maintain.easier to work on than a Chevrolet, and is plenty strong.I've raced 383's for many years with no problems. As mentioned in the other posts, the drivetrain is just as stout.

Biggrin

I also used to be a chevy guy, but after patching up my Z28 for the last time I got rid of it and bought a 70 Roadrunner, 383-4 speed with 8 3/4 rear. I know it usually costs a little more to get parts for mopars, but it's a small price to pay to drive the best! Free Roadrunner? Sounds like a great deal to me!! Good luck!

614Streets, It looks like you are asking if it has a Dana60.... It will not from the factory unless it was a 440 or a Hemi. But don't be disappointed, the 8.75 rear in it now will stay with you way down into the 11.00's. They are stronger than a GM 12 bolt in my opinion. And a properly jazzed 383 4speed with a 4.56 gear or so can get into the 12's all by itself without the juice...

Exactly. I know very little about Mopars except that here In Columbus Ohio ( 614 area code) things get pretty nuts when the Chrysler Nats goes off. ! Hey guys thanks alot , if I happen to actually get the car , Im going to see how I like it and since its low mile Im going to keep her pretty original (Gear change , maybe a rebuild , and a NOS top shot) , or maybe if It rubs me wrong I'll let someone who cars about it have it. Thanks guys.
