Default Stupid but funny...

Since June of '01 I have been driving a '01 Neon MTX. No frills, base model, but I've gotten pretty fond of the MTX. Anyhow, I found the best method to get someone off of my rear end is to simply roll down the window, stick my arm out, and motion with my hand "a little closer." Most people back off. Anyhow, I'm on this backroad in Orange County, NY with an early 90's Toyota Tercel absolutely drafting me. The hand thing got him to back off once, but he came back up on me after a mile or so. So I slowed down to about 40, shifted into 2nd gear and punched it. I shifted into 3rd around 55mph, 4th around 80mph. He was gone from my rearview at about the 70mph mark so when I hit the 30mph zone I jammed on the brakes and proceeded to do 25mph. As I expected, he came tear assing full tilt around a curve into the same 30mph zone and well...I guarantee he flat-spotted those tires. The Neon is a fun car for the money, I'm sure the SRT will be even more fun...230hp in a 2500lb car...wh00p.

ACTUALLY, THE 2003 NEON SRT-4 IS RATED AT 205HP, 220FT/LBS AND WEIGHS A LITTLE OVER 2,700LBS.

0-60MPH IN 5.9 SECONDS WITH LOW 15 SECOND 1/4 MILE.

Found that out after I read the press release on Mopar's site, original stats were in the 230 range. Either way, 205 in a car that won't weigh much more than 26/2700 lbs, we're talking something that can put the Subaru WRX, Acura RSX, Celica GT, Civic Si where they belong, BEHIND the Dodge.

Lay off the dang caps, I can read lower-case just fine.

SORRY MARLIN, BUT I ALWAYS WRITE IN CAPS. I GUESS I AM TOO LASY TO DO IT THE RIGHT WAY.

YES, I AGREE. THE SRT-4 IS GOING TO BE A MEAN LITTLE CAR STRAIGHT OUT OF THE BOX. THEY ALSO SAY THERE WILL BE MP PARTS AVAILABLE FOR IT, SOUNDS LETHAL.

ALSO, THE 2.0L AND 2.4L BLOCKS ARE MUCH STRONGER THAN THE 2.2L AND 2.5L EVER WERE. I CAN SEE 300 - 500HP NEONS TAKING OVER. IT'S COOL THOUGH, AT LEAST THEY ARE MADE BY DODGE.
I DON'T HAVE 20,000 DOLLARS THOUGH, GUESS I'LL JUST STICK TO THE OLD SCHOOL MOPAR TURBOS.

Cool

I too like the way this Neon SRT-4 sounds. Especially since I can get the 2 kids in the back seat.

With a 0-60 MPH time of 5.9 sec. and a top speed of 148 MPH, I would have thought the 1/4 mile times would be better than low 15 sec. I would have thought it would be at least a low 14 sec. car.

My best time in my SC 4X4 Dakota is 14.5 @ 93.5 MPH. The speed limiter still shuts it down at 115 MPH, and I'm not sure what my 0-60 MPH times are, but I doubt they are 5.9 or better. Something doesn't seem to add up right to me. It just seems that with a top end of 148 MPH the Neon shouldn't just die off so quick after 60 MPH.

The info. I saw didn't give any 1/4 mile times.

Oh, by the way I enjoyed your story Marlin. I had a '97 Neon for about 2 years before trading it in. I miss the little car. They are fun to drive and I'll bet this new one coming out will be a blast!

TURBO 1,
Thanks for the link. It took me a while to find the 1/4 times being that they were from the March 2001 article when the car was still just a concept.

Quote:
Whereas for engine performance, a 45 cubic-inch supercharger is added to the 2.0L (1995 cc) SOHC 16v Neon powerplant. With 11 psi of boost, it produces a staggering 208 hp at 6200 rpm and 180 lb-ft of torque at 4200 rpm. This level of power in combination with the Neon's light weight creates a vehicle worthy of a projected 5.9s 0-60 mph run and a 15.02 at 102 mph quarter-mile time. To those who know quarter-mile times, this one speaks loudly of a lack of traction. In fact, "wheelspin in second gear is possible."

The car that is going into production is a Turbo charged 2.4L instead of a Supercharged 2.0L with 220 ft lbs of torque instead of 180, so I think their numbers may be off a little. They talk about lack of traction, but with 0-60 times of 5.9 it can't be that bad, and if it's coming across the line at 102 MPH in the 1/4 then it's not lacking on the top end. That's pretty close to how fast your coming across the line in the quarter, according to your sig. 12.79 @ 109.1 MPH.

Do you see what I'm talking about with the numbers not adding up right? Apparantly they haven't done any 1/4 mile times in the new turboed version. I would have to say at least a low 14 sec. car straight from the factory wouldn't you?

That's weird, I get wheelspin in 2nd if I shift just right with the MTX.... and I've only got 132hp. Then again I have shopping cart tires on the thing. Can't wait to get some wider asphalt crayons on this car.

YEAH, THE FIGURES DON'T EXACTLY SOUND CORRECT. A LACK OF TRACTION, PROBABLY. I WONDER WHAT THE OVERALL FINAL DRIVE RATIO IS. IT DOES NOT ADD UP, BUT THAT'S WHAT THEY SAY. YOU CAN RUN A HIGH 15 SEC 1/4 WITH A 3.0L G BODY WITH A 5 SPD. AND A FEW MODS, WITH THE HEAVIER CURB WEIGHT AND LESS AVAILABLE HP AND TORQUE. I WONDER IF BOOST IS REGULATED PAST 4,000 RPM. I THINK THEY SAID IT PEAKED FROM 2,000 RPM - 4,000RPM. MAYBE IT'S POWERBAND DROPS OFF THE FACE OF THE EARTH AFTER 4,000RPM. THAT WOULD BE A CRUCIAL FACTOR ON A CAR WITH A FOUR CYLINDER AND NO TOP END POWER. IT'S HARD TO SAY. CHRYSLER USED TO BE REAL CONSERVATIVE WITH THIER PERFORMANCE FIGURES IN ADVERTISING. HOPEFULLY THIS IS THE CASE. AT ANY RATE, IF IT WILL ONLY RUN A 15, I BET WITH A LITLLE MASSAGING IT COULD BE A LOW 13 SEC CAR WITH A DECENT RELIABILITY RATE.

MAYBE THE 205 IS BHP RATHER THAN SAE NET. MAYBE THE USABLE HP IS LOWER.

I HAVE A FRIEND WITH AN OLD 85 GTS 2.2LT1 THAT RAN A 16.1 1/4 WITH NO MODS WHATSOEVER AND A LACKING 146 HP MOTOR AND MORE BAGGAGE THAN AN SRT-4. I GUESS WE WILL SE WHAT MOTOR TREND OR ROAD AND TRACK CLAIM THEY GET OUT OF IT.
