Default Stock carb on a '68 440

Hey everyone, i was wondering if you could tell me what the flow rate is on the stock carter carb. on a '68 440 (4bbl). Also, i'm looking for a little more power, what do you guys suggest?
i'm hesitant to put headers on because i'll probably burn up the starter. How do you guys get around that prob? heat shield?
thanx

440HP AVS used the same size throttle plates as the later 750 AFB so I'm going to say 750CFM

Just did some research on that carb. The chrysler rateing is 675 cfm, but carter says they were 750 on the 440s.

Didn't it come with the smaller version as well. The 630cfm unit. The non-HP engines that is. I have a small AFB off of a 67 440 from a Imperial. No air velocity door for the secondaries on this one.

Better headers, ceramic coating on headers, heat wrap on headers, smaller starter(new style).

Get your headers coated, they will last MUCH longer and the heat reduction is dramatic, just get a reputable shop to do the work, there is some junk coatings out there. Mine only cost me $240 cdn to get mine done and my full size starter is fine. just my $.02 hope this helps dave

The new mini-starter works really good. I have 2" Hooker Super comp headers, uncoated, no head wrap or sheild and have had no problems for three years.
The headers did cook the old full sized starter.

The mini starter is about $110. Be sure to get the same as OEM sized one, the "racing" sized one is a bear to put on the BB's.
