Has anybody seen a thing like that? Any info?

I found such a carburetor on a wrecking yard.

Otherwise it looks a lot like a 750 vacuum Holley, but the "vacuum can" on the passenger side is as big as on the 6-pack carbs and tilted that way, too.

... and what I found most peculiar was that the rear/secondary barrells were TOGETHER ie. they were shaped like "bathtub" and the whole carb was actually a 3-barrell, right?

In a Musclecar magazine I found one article that said that for example Baldwin Motion used such carbs and they flowed 1050cfm.

Where do I get more info on those BIG 3-barrells, or is it just a waste of time?

Best Regards, BB70Challenger

The 3-barrel Holley came out in the mid 60's originally used in NASCAR and was rated at 950 cfm although I'm sure they could be modified to 1050 cfm with no problem. The back barrel was huge and it seemed to work better on long tracks with sustained RPM. It had a tendency to bog a little off the corners on short tracks, was still a killer carb, was the best until Holley brought out the 4500 series dominators. If the vacuum unit is working, it could make a pretty decent street carb on a bigger motor, would need an open plenum or spacer under the carb to clear the back butterfly. Not really sure what info is still available but other than the back barrel, I think all the circuitry and other components are pretty much the same as most of the 4150 series carbs. Definitely don't think it would be a waste of time, if the price was right....

I used one of these for a short time and it was a great carb on my 440. I sold it to a guy who used it on a 455 Olds and it worked just super on that car as well. djs

These carbs are 3150's or 3160's. Just like 4150-60, but has 3 barrels, Same thinking on rebuilds and hop ups. not sure of CFM's but I know Buick or Oldsmobile had an intake made for this carb, I remember seeing a picture of it somewhere with an "ultra rare" sidebar. There was one for sale for 90.00 at spring fling 1999 (wow, what a memory!!) The guy didnt know what it was...

I got the 950 cfm 3-bbl around '68 and put it on my '66 Plymouth Sport Satelite that had the 383 engine. I also had headers. (I put the Plymouth's 4 bbl carb & intake manifold on my mom's '63 Chrysler 300.)
I put an Edelbrock intake manifold & the 3 bbl on my Plymouth's engine, started it up & took it for a drive. A HUGE increase in power over the stock 4 bbl. Gas mileage went down to 10 MPG, but at 29.9cents per gallon who cared? It drove great for a while and then performance really dropped off. Discovered the spark plugs were fouled up by all the extra gas from the 3 bbl. I decided the 3bbl would work a lot better on a 440 and not my 383, so I pulled it off and put on a Holley 750 4 bbl and my mileage jumped up to 13 MPG, no more fouled plugs, and it ran better than the stock carb.
