Would a 46RH work with a BB???
From what I've read, the 46RH (and RE) are essentially modern versions of the A727. So do y'all think I would be able to hook these 2 up and go or will it not work that way?
Thanks for any input, good or bad, Andrew |

I have had some dealings with the 46 RH since I am running one in my Jeep right now. I know the 46RH will bolt up to a small block no problem. So if a 727 from a small block will block will bolt up to a big block a 46RH wil bolt up to a big block. However you would probably want a 46RH because the the first 3 gears are hydraulic with the over drive unit being controled by computer (Or if you want controled by a switch you would install). The 46RE is a electronically controled and would be next to imposible to use with a Carb car. If you need any help with this just mail me.

The BB and SB use different trannys. You'll need a adapter plate for this. Sorry I cant direct youo. I have read it being done once before. (Hot Rod mag/ BB Roadrunner)

In the 46RE, the 1-2-3 shifts are still controlled hydraulically. The TC lockup, and the OD shift are however controlled by the computer.

newBlackdak,
The 46RE is not hydraulically shifted. It can't. It has no govenor assembly(valves, wieghts, and springs). All trans 1995 and older use this govenor, that spinns around on the output shaft, to figure out when to shift. All od trans 1996 and newer rely on two selonoids stuck in the bottom of the valve body to tell the computer when to shift. Or the computer uses these solenods to make the shift or both? I believe one's for preasure and one's for temp. You are right that the computer also controls the lockup and od, all od trans do this, no matter if they are electroniclly shifted or hydraulically . The 95' and older 46rh/ 518's(same trans, different name)will , like SleepnZJ said, make for a much simplier swap. Im considering this myself, I just wished somebody made a trans crossmember for this. Dave |

Thanks for the replies guys!
Lucky for me I have a 46RH in my posession, so now just to find this adapter plate or whatever to be able to join the it to a BB. So, if OD is computer controlled, is it useless on a carbed engine or is there a way to still let the comp decide on the shift? Through speed readings maybe or what? Thanks again. |

You can actually hook up a switch to your dash that you could flip on the highway when you want OD. As fr the adapter plate I know there is a company out there that does make a plate to fit a small block trans to a big block engine.

There is a company right now that is testing a reverse pattern manual valve body with a trans brake for the 500-518-618 transmissions.

The 46RH-RE are small block transmissions only, with the different bolt patterns between the small and big blocks being the major difference. You might try JVX RACING TRANSMISSIONS to see if they have an adapter for this type of swap....call (901) 274-7238
