starter hangups/staying engaged
I have 2 1996 Dodge 3500 pickups with Cummins engines. One auto, one stick. Auto has 140,000 miles, stick has 200,000 miles. Both have identical problems. Occasionaly starter stays engaged when key is released. Switching ignition off HAS NO EFFECT !!! Stick can stall engine by releasing clutch while in gear with brakes locked. Auto has to give engine full throttle several time to kick disengage starter.
Stick truck was recently acquired from Texas. Have had to replace starter on stick truck last week. If problem was bendix or flywheel, shutting ignition switch off would shut engine down. HELPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP Dick Holden |

the problem is the starter solenoid. the contacts in it get electro erroded. IE they start to weld themselves together at contact.
you can fix it two ways, get a rebuild for the contacts or put in a new starter (I WOULD JUST REPLACE THE STARTER) one word of caution here for you, if you let this go on they will eventually stick and then you will burn up the starter and probably the fuel shutoff solenoid as well. it shares the same positive battery wire as the starter and will burn up in the short-out. take good note of where the shutoff solenoid fuse is. this will be the only way to shut it off when this happens more frequently. |
