Default torsion bars

Right now I have .86 dia bars in my '70 440 Cuda. I know, they are out of a 318 car. I want better handling so I'm going to upgrade them. Should I go with the .92 dia. or the .96 dia. bars? I don't mind it stiff, but I'm not sure I want it to ride like a 1 ton truck either. Is anybody happy or unhappy with what they have?

What did the big block Cuda's have?? One size up from that should still be good without being to stiff. Not much help I know but also keep in mind in case you didn't know that there's a right and left side to torsions bars!

I believe the stock bar would be the .96 bars. You can get them up to 1.25 dia- but those are racing bars. I use a 1.00 bars on the runner- no complaints, and I like the handling. There was another post on this a couple of weeks back in this section-- see if you can find it. One thing- Is the car a stock 440 car? if not you need to think about the effect it will have on the rest of the suspension. It all works together.

Good luck

Had 1.04 torsion bars on a 73 Duster with 440 with KYBs and Urethane bushings. The car felt rock solid at all speeds, would handle well and ride was firm. The .096s would be the best compromise. Mopar bars come in two versions, The ones left over from the original cars and the after market variety. The after market bars have no left or right just install one on each side.

I have the 0.96" on my '71 Charger and the ride is firm, but not really bad. My Ford Contour rode almost as stiff. In theory, with no other changes the stiffer bars will want to make the car under-steer a bit more than it does now. I have really stiff rear springs and sway-bar on the rear of my Charger and it tends to want to over-steer. Maybe I should get the 1.00" bars?
A Friend runs the 1" bars on his '69 Charger street car and he dosen't complain, but I have never ridden in his car to make a comparison.
