Default 496 street engine

Ok, first of all, what is a 496 engine. To the best of my knowledge I know it is a 440 stroker engine, but what crank does it use?
Second, could this be used as a street engine? What gas mileage does it get? Kinda need to know wether i'll be able to drive it more than 100 miles or so for a weekend car to cruise and occasionally race against rice rockets who don't know any better. Also, roughly what horsepower would i be looking at if I was to set it up as a street engine? Thanks.

THE 496 IS PRIMARILY BUILT INTO A 440 BLOCK USING THE MOPAR OR NEW EAGLE 4.15 STROKE CRANK, ALTHOUGH IT CAN ALSO BE BUILT INTO A LOW BLOCK 400. DONT KNOW ON THE GAS MILEAGE, BUT I CANT BELEIVE TO MANY 496 MOTORS HAVE BEEN ASSEMBLED WITH FUEL ECONOMY AS A PRIMARY CONCERN.
I HAVE HEARD OF THEM PUTTING OUT 650+ STREETABLE H.P. WITHOUT MUCH EFFORT (GOOD ALUMINUM HEADS, INDY SR'S OR BETTER,SOLID CAM AROUND .600 LIFT, 10.5 - 11.0:1 COMP. ETC.)
IM DROOLING ON MY KEYBOARD!! IT'S A GREAT WAY TO GO IF YOU HAVE THE DOUGH!!!

P.S. IF YOUR GOING TO BUILD ONE GET A HOLD OF THE GUYS AT MUSCLE MOTORS THEY WILL HOOK YOU UP.

I have a 496 in my 70 roadrunner, i run edlebrock heads, rpm intake, 950 hp holley, 355 gears, isky 505 hyd cam and stock convertor, bfg 325 drag tires and get 16 to 18 mpg in town!! i could hardly believe it my self but it does!! best 1/8 ET and mph to date 7.24@96.89 60 foot 1.61... the car is all steel with power steering and power brakes... In my mind a stroker is the only way to go!!! ........Lee.....

I'm in the process of building a 496 to go in a 71 Duster. I'm using an Eagle steel crank, Indy 440-1 heads, Comp. Cams solid roller, ect, ect. Like CL said, it should be an honest 650hp street motor on pump gas. This motor in a 2800 lb A-body should be tons of fun and trouble for the bowtie boys
