Default 318 Head Questions

I have a 72 318 4bbl Satellite Daily Driver
which will never see a race track. Some ocassional Stop light action only.
The engine needs valve guides.
Blue smoke on a hot start.
I was thinking about 360 heads BUT will the loss of Compression offset the HP increase ?
How about 302 heads ? .
I have a cast 70 340 intake so Can I do a manifold/casket match myself with my dremel or a
drill with a grinding stone ?
What are my BEST choices ( Bang for the BUCK )
Thanks
Fred..

Well, I can tell you'll not get done with that Dremel until 2010. I don't have access to machinery to do porting work. So for me, the bolt on difference is definetly for the 360 heads or the 308's. I think the 360's are easier to find and the larger ports, 1.88/1.60 valve heads are working great on my 318. I haven't had any 302 or 308 heads to tell you anything other than what people have posted on this board. Good Luck!

Mill your head .060 to get the compresion up with the 360 heads. Gasket matching the intake to the heads isn't needed because you allready have them matching up at the port windows. The increase in performance is small. Even more so because your not going to see the strip.
If you use the 318 head (302?) then I would open the ports to match the 340 intake. The roof and center divider walls are most important. Also, install the 1.88/1.60 valves with a 3 angle valve job and a pocket porting.
The 318 heads would work best unless you plan on really hoppin up the engine. Thats where the 360 heads would work a little better. The strip.
