Oil leak. HELP!!!
I have a 98 Neon Sport DOHC Automatic. Its got 73,000 and well serviced all of its life. I have smelled oil and now see that its losing oil. 1 quart a month now in drips. It looks as if its coming form the rear main seal. How much will the dealers or a good shop charge and what all is involved in taking the tranny down to replace the seal?? Thanks for any Price quotes and suggestions. SOmebody said head gasket. I heard they blew between cylinders, not oil passages. Thanks

NEON OIL LEAK
IT SOUNDS TO ME LIKE YOU HAVE THE ORIGINAL COMPOSITE HEAD GASKET WE CHANGED TO A MULTI-LAYER STEEL HEAD GASKET TO CURE THIS PROBLEM THE ORIGINAL GASKET HAD A SMALL SEAL THAT WAS INTEGRAL TO THE GASKET THIS SEAL WOULD FAIL CAUSING AN OIL LEAK AT THE LEFT REAR OF THE HEAD WHERE THE MAIN OIL FEED TO THE HEAD IS LOCATED REPLACEMENT OF THE GASKET WILL CURE THIS CONDITION

I noticed this morning that my 96 SOHC has finally started leaking at the drivers side rear of the head. Has anyone done this gasket replacement, and how was it? I'm considering doing the job myself since the dealer wants $900 to repair it. Any help or advice would be appreciated, thanks. Todd

I hope its a head gasket on mine instead of main seal. I also know the guy at work took his in after warranty and they fixed it for free.
