I don't know what your owners manual says about synthetics or when to do your first oil change, but in my '86 Dodge Van with a 318, I switched at the first oil change. According to my records that was at 2986 miles. The van now has 301,000 miles on it.

I would make the switch on the first change. Normally, when a motor is still breaking in, I'll change at the first 1000 miles. And then every 3000 or three months, whichever comes first. Air filter is every 6000 and every 15000 on the pcv. Keep up on this and you're bearings will love you for a long time yet. Other intervals would be:
rad - 2 yrs or 24000 miles. same on trans and rear diff.
Enjoy the new ride!

The break-in oil change for new cars is no longer recognized. For a long time now, manufacturers have just said to change the oil at the normal intervals. My 96 Concorde said that my first oil change was due at 3 Mo/3000 for city driving or 6 mo/7500 miles for freeway driving. They don't put break-in oil in new car motors anymore either so I'd change at 3000 miles. You can switch to synthetic at that time too. BTW, make sure you read the manual for types of gear lube too. My Concorde's service manual specifically says NOT to use synthetic gear lube in the transaxle.

No more break in because they are probably using moly rings at the assembly line.
