Wheel/Tire combo
Hi all! I am thinking about replacing (but keeping the old) tires and wheels on my 70Challenger R/T SE. It currently has the rally wheels, originals.
What I want to put on is a nice set of wheels, larger at the rear (of course) and a good set of tires. The car will not be raced (at least not much more than showing off on the local roads) so I want something that looks good and will fit the car "as is". It currently has drum brakes all around. Tire size recommendations? Wheel sizes and brands/styles? Appreaciate any opinions/ideas! |

I'm for the vintage look
Are you going for the vintage look? If so, I think that torque thrusts looks bad along with some BF Goodrich Radial T/A's. 17 x 10's in the back and 17 x 8's in the front. This would look good if you replaced the drum brakes with disks also. I think that combo would look good on that car. Well that's what I would do anyway!

Thanks for the info....
Helvedere - I'm looking for that old "souped up" look from back in the 70s when folks stuck a set of wheels and tires on (usually "jammed" in the wheel wells because of the tire size). I don't want to lift the car front or rear. Pro - thanks! I'll check them out! I appreciate the feedback.... When I get everything "done" (if that day ever comes!) I'll post some pics...... |

I think dog dishes and steelies would look cool, and it would hide your rusty (if they are) brake drums...Sorry, I just like that look!!!

I'll be showing my age here, but what the heck! If you want the early 70's look, the most popular wheels back then were either Cragar SS wheels or slotted mags (the ones with 5 oval holes in them). Chrome steelies (chromed steel wheels) were pretty common too!

Hasbro, I think if you are looking for that Retro hotrod look, you got to go with Keystone classics, BFG TAs, 7x14 in front with 235/60/14 and 15x8 rears with 255/60/15. They will fit like a dream and look awesome. Do they still make Keystones? Check out Discount tire. If they make em, they are probably pretty cheap.
Whatever you use, make sure to prep and paint your brake drums some bright contrasting color to stand out behind the rims. I used to live in Raleigh, down 401S and 110. I had my friend (James A.) in Fuquay sell my 73 340 b5 blue challenger for me back in 97. What a mistake. I look back now and think, ok, great car, completely restored, summer after college graduation...........one way ticket to Raleigh and two weeks to get to Austin. Damn that could have been a great road trip. |

Back spacing?
I have a 1971 Challenger and I want to get wheels/tires for it. What is the best 15" wheel width and backspacing?

You can search this question in here, its been asked many times.
If by the best, you mean the widest, then I think the answer is 275/60/15 rear and 235/60/15 front with 7" stock rims. With custom backspacing you may be able to get wider meats in there without moving the springs. I have BFG TA 255/60/15 rear and 235/60/15 front with 8" Magnum 500 rims on my 70 Challenger convertible. I should have gone with 7" in the front. Its a little to wide and I can't lower it in front as much as I would like with the stock height rear springs ( only 1/2-3/4" too high). They do really look awesome and very meaty. If you have SS springs in the rear (1.5" higher I think) then the 8" rims in front would be perfect. Anyone in Texas want to trade a clean 15x7" Magnum for a very new 15x8" (maybe for the rear) with less than 100 miles on it? |

An easy way:
- keep the front end as is - back: get 15x8 Rallye wheels from Stockton or Kanter - get 275/50/15 BFGoodrich Drag Radials ---> no hassle with fitting problems, won´t cost you an arm and a leg, looks classic resto muscle AND this combo provides you traction ! Just my 2 cents, - BB 70 Challenger |

I have a 71 Charger with a set of 17x10 Centerlines (275/60) with 5" backspacking in back with 17x8 (245/45ZR) in front (not sure of spacing). I got a great deal on the wheels and tires from a buddy, but I'm always keeping my eye out of a new set. Stockton (spelling?) has some really nice stuff out that looks good on older cars. Here are some pictures.
