Question exhaust pressure

A friend of mine has a book that says to measure back pressure of your exhaust system with a pressure gauge just before the muffler. Has anyone ever tried this. I think the author said it should be less than 5 psi.

In some of the muffler tests they drill a hole in the exhaust tube before the muffler to compare backpressure of different mufflers.
Some of the better mufflers had very low back pressure.
