Default 318 to 440 conversion

I have a 71 plymouth salelite with a 318 and I want to convert it over to a 440. The 440 is out of a 76 dodge 3/4 ton pickup. Will it work? and will the motor mounts line up properly?

That should be an easy swap for you. All you need is the Raised block engine mounts. The big block tranny should mount on the same cross member, but I may be wrong. Make sure the rest of the car can handle that 440. Torsion bars, front suspension, radiator, brakes, linkage, rear end, and rear suspension are all good things to beef up when swaping like this.

Default 318 to 440 conv.

If the motor you want to use is out of a p-up then you will have to change the oil pan dipstick and tube motor mounts and exhaust manifolds. When you swap the dipstick and tube dont forget to remove the plug in the left {drivers} side of the block where the car tube goes in. The best way to get the oil pan and dipstick and tube is right from any Dodge dealer, it is Mopar Performance part #P5249063 big block center sump pan package. Just as a note if you haven't noticed the p-up dipstick tube is attached to the side of the truck oil pan and the car tube goes into the side of the block. Also don't forget to find a big block tranny if the donor truck was a 4wd. Good Luck, hope this helps.

Not trying to spook you, I'm a BB fan too, but there is another possible tranny glitch. The 2 piece driveshaft in the longer WB p/u's uses a bolt on front yoke instead of a slider and has a shorter tailshaft hsg. BB 727's are relatively easy to come by so not a big problem. Just thought the info might save you some hassle. The only other problem I can think of that might sneak up on you is possible clearance problems with valve cover and brake booster. Mostly, it's a bolt in. Good luck, you'll really like it when it's done.

I think Ive read that the BB uses a larger radiator than the SB. Just another thing to research.
Good luck

In addition to the pan differences...

The big block truck water pump housing lets out on the opposite side the BB car housing does, and the same side your sb does(I think)

Not a big deal, but if you are getting a wrecker rad for the car, you will need the car pump housing. Or if you are simply going to have a custom rad made, specifiy where the hose outlets go.
