Got a problem with my 99 Dakota 4X4, 318, 5sp, wondering if anyone else ran into this.

When I'm coming up to a traffic light and I put the truck in neutral, the idle will surge from 500 RPM to 7-800 RPM and back down. This will continue until I either put the truck in gear and relaese the clutch or come to a complete stop. This will do it also if I am at a complete stop and let the truck roll down a hill, as soon as the speedometer indicates speed, the engine starts revving on it's own. So far the dealer has replaced the PCM and the idle speed motor, neither has fixed it. Anyone else have this problem or know the cure for it?

Mike

I had a similar problem with my '93 318 mag. It showed up after I had cleaned the carbon out of the throttle body. After it was warmed to operating temp idle rpm's fluctuated UP and back to std. setting (never lower) We (dealer's mechanic and myself) searched for a month or more, replaced throttle body gaskets, map sensor, O2 sensor, PCV valve, vac. lines, called the factory, changed computers, etc. etc. Oil had consumption increased also. One day he happened to lay his hand on the oil fill opening on the valve cover while the engine was running and noticed an extreme amount of vacuum. Turns out that the intake has a plate on the bottom and the gasket was blown on it. Since your truck is new maybe the plate is loose or improperly installed. My intake had a lot of burnt oil carbon in it. Hope this helps.

A good indication of a blown gasket is dark, sooty or oily looking throttle body venturis.
This is a common problem on Magnum manifolds.
