Does anyone out there have any thoughts on what year 904 works best for drag racing? I'll be putting this in a 68' 360 powered A-body.

Christopher,

Thanks for the info. I've printed out your reply to use while I search for a trans.

Christopher, I am using the 904 behind my 360 because of what a few racers suggested also. It is a 79 year model and was used originally on a 318. Other than having to change over to an externally balanced converter I did nothing to the tranny. Is there any other way to tell this 999 version versus the 998 by the numbers on the housing? Just curious cause no one told me about this 5 or 4 disc drum. Thanks

These are the differences on the transmissions.....904-has a 3 disc front clutch in 6 cyl cars, 318's have a 4 disc front clutch. 999 was only behind 360's and have a 5 disc front clutch, so you have a 4 disc trans. The 4 disc unit will hold up fine,in fact on the 727 big block trans,I only use the standard non Hemi 4 disc trans, and they work great. The one in the Dart has been in for 9 years with no problems at all.I do like the 5 disc for a 904,it's a bit beefier for drag strip launches especially with a trans brake.

HV your best bet for a 999 is a 70s cordoba or magnum witha 360. Part # is 4028465 1977 and back and 1978 is part # 4028878. 79 and up 999s are all lockups at least through 83. If you can score a good deal on a lockup 999 dont pass on it. Any 82 and up 904 derivitive has the 2.67 ratio low gear set which will fit in any 74 and up with steel carriers. there was running change in 74 from the aluminum carriers which had a different spline on the output shaft. the early shaft will strip the later spline BTDT. You can easily convert the lock up to non lockup, all you really need is the correct non lockup input shaft and converter.Use the L\U valve body, just put a stiffer spring on the lockup valve to block the L\U function and pull the lockup ball from the reaction shaft support (the back half of the pump). To pull the ball from the support use a stud welder that body shops use to pull dents. Ask if you need further details. You can NOT use the five disc clutch retainer in earlier trannies, the R\S support was changed to accommodate the longer clutch retainer. The 999s also got wider KD band, bigger KD servo.

I use a 904 in my circle track truck and they are very strong. Christopher is right the 4 disc unit is the way to go, with MP race clutches and bands a 904 can handle 500ftlbs of torque. I can add we have had zero problems with ours in over 3 seasons of races, thats over 50 races.

Easiest place to find a 999 is a 75-77 cordoba with 360.I have found several of them & all were in dobas but one it was in a 76 fury.

You can opt out of the external balance converter by using a scalloped B&M 360 flex plate. It is an SFI rated piece that is very nice for the price. We have one in our 70 Duster 360/904 car. I also run a direct drive 904 in a circle track car and have had few problems with fully prepped 904 trans. Did shred the stock flex plate though. If you are converting from a 727 and already have the B&M flex plate stick with it. You can use the 727 plate if you use the mopar perf. lightweight starter. The converter bolt pattern is the same, but the plate extends out near the ring gear teeth. The only starter I have used is the MP lightweight with this combo. We put the correct one in during last trans thrash.

Thanks guy's, if any thing happens to the old tranny I will keep this info. I try not to toy with too many things as long as they are still working.
