Question

I'd like to upgrade the exhaust system on my 97 Dakota 5.2 extended cab. I've looked at Flowmaster, Borla and Gibson. It's probably going to be one of these but I'm concerned about the sound. I don't want something that sounds like a Harley Davidson with a restrictor plate. Just a low growl. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

Mike

Do the Flowmaster! It's the only one with a way to tune out the resonance (drone) that makes aftermarket exhuast systems obnoxious!
Make sure you use one with a 5" thick case - either a "big block" muffler or a new "70 series". The 70 will be louder inside the cab, but easier to install since it's 10" wide instead od 12". Do a K7N filter and good ignition wires too!

Thanks Orange Bee,

I already have a K&N Gen II on the way and I was looking at either Magnecor or MSD for wires. Any preference?

Slats,

Do the Flowmaster, you won't regret it.

BTW, the Big Block is the same as a 70 Series. Stick to the 50 Series, w/5" thick case. Great sound and performance. Flowmasters part number is 52557.

Slats,

Whoops! Didn't ask whether you have 2.5" or 3" in mind. The part number from the post above is for a 2.5", if you want the 3", then the part number is 53057.

In a Magazine test ("SPORT TRUCK" May 1998) -they tested 4 "cat back" exhaust systems.

Jardine, Borla, Hedman and Gibson were the brands tested. The final results ?:

Jardine offered the biggest boost in performance, followed by Borla, then Hedman in a very close third and Gibson was dead last.

Magnaflow makes an excellent exhaust set up for our trucks (just ask BIG JOHN). Here's the info:
