Question Antique Head Question - or Question for old heads

I have a set of heads I hope someone can inform me more about. They are the 63 361-383-413 casting #2463200. They have been updated before I got them with Bronze guides, Triple Springs, Teflon Seals, 2.14" intakes and 1.81" exhaust with MP adjustable rockers. The biggest thing I want to know is are the ports compairable with the later model heads? Anything else that I might know I would like to know also. Thanks.

As I understand it they are an early version of the 516 ('64-'67) closed chamber head and came with the 1.60 ex. valve. Most porting outfits do not offer much more than pocket work on the exhaust side due to the port being smaller than the later 915 or 906 heads that came with the 1.74 ex. valve. Externally, virtually the same.

Default Antique Heads

I traded for these heads about 15 years ago and was told they are 300 J heads. The J heads came with 1.74 ex. When I got them I took them to the machinest I trust and had a fresh 3 angle and he went ahead and did a throat cut too. They have been on a shelf in the garage since that but I am thinking of putting them to use soon. If I can use them, it makes sense as all the work put into them, but will I be handicaped before I start?

The 300J heads were good performance heads, used on the '62 343HP 383 8BBL (2 inline 4BBL's). The story says they were reintroduced in '67 as the 915. If they are 300J's they will preform quite well. One of my books says the 915 superceded the 300J but doesn't offer where they were while everthing used 516's from '64 to '67. Do they have 4 or 6 valve cover bolts, and are the rocker stands separate aluminum pieces or cast in place?

The heads have 6 mounting holes for Valve cover. The Stands are alum. and bolt to iron towers milled flat about 1" high. Does that help any? I know this isn't a question for newbuddies as they refere back to the roots of the B-RB.

The book says "B engine heads up to '63 had only 4 valve cover attaching bolts and used aluminum rocker shaft attaching brackets". " In '63 and '64 the 6 bolt valve cover attaching bolts and cast in rocker stands were introduced"."Several early B engine high performance heads, like the 300J heads, used the 2.08 intake and the 1.74 exhaust". Evidently they were doing some experimentation in that period. The 6 bolt covers make them '63, and the bolt on stands make them '62 or earlier. The 200 (last 3 digits) nails them as '63's. If you can find some examples to look at, check out a 906 ex port (stock) and a 516 (stock) ex port, then compare with your heads. The 516''s are smaller by a noticeable margin. If your heads are like the 906's they are probably the genuine article and could be quite valuable. As you can see from the above quotes, it's little bit cloudy. Best of luck to you!

Default Question for old heads

Thanks Jelsr. I'll try to find some heads to compair with. You have been helpful. You will have to admit, It's not like asking about a set of 906's. These heads seem to fall in between the cracks almost. I traded a worn out Honda 350cc for the heads, TM6 intake, 11.5 TRW's with fresh rods and (Lanatiti?) cam. The guy had wrecked his and needed the forks and wheel. I had $100 in the bike. Thanks again.
