I've read posts in newsgroups and elsewhere about spark-knock in the 360 engines. There seems to be alot of "fixes" for it. Better gas, lower temp. plugs, reroute plug wires, lower temp. thermastate, etc. It really doesn't seem like anyone (including DC know how to fix it. I was just curious if anyone here has any experience with it. I know what spark-knock (pre-ignition) is and it seems as though it might be something that just can't be fixed. IMHO not a good thing since the owners manual in my 99 Ram says "high engine speed knock is not normal and damage to the motor won't be covered by warrenty. Thanks, JC

The only way I can avoid it is to run premium fuel...

The most common cause of spark kncok is a faulty plenum gasket.

I had it. Sounded like parts falling off the engine at some points. My cmputer was flashed without me knowing before I had a chance to do anything about it.

My friends 89 has this problem with his 318 when towing and it's loud too. To the point where you hear it over the radio.

Best fix I can see is to run high octane or get the flash. The flash will kill power right from the start but it sorta comes back after 3,000 RPMS. Horrible for towing and hauling heavy loads. I know forst hand. I wish I had gotten the V-10 or diesel but you live and learn.

I bet if you made internal engine modifications to your engine and changed what you could, it would not do this, but not every person can afford this.

I guess many of the Magnums have pinged or do ping and I believe it has to do with the engine itself and changing factors such as computer control, fuel injection, changing of exhaust setups, emission controls, and a good possibility that some gas is not as good as it should be.

some have changed thermostats, and plugs and had some success but there are others that have not. Another cause is the plenum gasket, which I have never had trouble with and chaning that has reduced oil consumption and also reduced or eliminated pinging. There are many factors. Some you can change, and others you can't.
