Question Carb?

I have a freind who is going to run a street stock this year at P.I.R. and thier new ss rules say any 500 cfm 2 barrel carb or stock type 4bl (no holley 4bls) How easy is the thermoquad to race with and what needs to be done to it, or who specializes in the thermoquad?
He will be running it on a 360 w/headers about a .560 lift cam with around 270degrees duration aluminum intake turning 7,000 rpm

Pin em down on the ruling, OEM should allow the correct Holley, but not the aftermarket models. Much easier to work with than the Thermoquad or the Quadrajet, both of which are legal OEM's also.

Default Street Stock Carb

For my money, go with the Holley 2 bbl. Just be sure you get a 500 cfm not the 350 cfm. They look a lot alike. A lot of tracks in the Kentucky/Tennessee area have a Holley 2 bbl rule, even the famous Nashville Fairgrounds and Highland Rim all run the 2 bbl, even on their late models! They work real well on a small block Mopar! The big dogs in the dirt late models are running them sideways with a special adapter. Good Luck

We ran (will run again) a TQuad 360 "street stock" class car. The problems are getting parts, although in our case we have the remnants of 2 old Carter "strip kits" (metering rods, primary jets, and secondary jets), so we had some flexibility in tuning. No question a Holley 500 is a simpler beast to tune. On the other hand the big primary TQuads are 850 cfm ( I think) and in my mind a .560" cam 360 can use more than 500 cfm.

Other problems with TQuads is that most left in the wrecking yards have loose wore out throttle shafts, making the carb hard to tune for idling, low rpm running. If you can find a good one give it a try first. I wouldn't worry too much about the primary jet size and metering rods at first, just get the secondary jets and air door opening set right since at WOT this is where it all happens in a TQuad.
