Question Carb size for 440

I'm building a 440 with 9.7 to 1 compression, Hughes 3038BL, ported 906 heads and a Edelbrock Performer RPM intake. It is for a Challenger with 3.91 gears and 2500 stall convertor. What is the best size carb ? I'm thinking of a 850 with vacuum secondaries because the car will be used mostly on the street.

Thanks for the input

I like your thinking. Even an 800 would be OK. better to error in small.

I go along with Rumblefish, at 6000rpm and 100% volumetric effeciency (which you won't get) the engine would require 763cfm. Overall performance and driveability will be better with the smaller carb.

I have a TQ 850 on mine. Runs good. 1967 440 +.030 Aluminum Edy dual plane, TRW flat tops, Hughes HE1423 cam and Hooker headers in a 4x4 Ramcharger with 31" tires and 3.23 gears.

440 RamCharger:

It is kind of difficult to compare your spread bore carb and a square bore carb. Yours works well because of the small primary throttle blades. With your combination and being in a 4x4 with no gears and tall tires, I would doubt that you use 650cfm out of your possable 850.

If I was building a street 440 I think I would look for something in the 750cfm range.

I have a 440 + .040....9:1 compression, Hughes 3038BL, Ported 906 heads and a Edelbrock Performer RPM intake too...Sound familiar... I tested with 750 CFM Holley DP / 850 CFM Holley DP and a 1000 CFM Holley HP DP.... The difference I have.... 4.57 rear end and a 4 speed.... Car performed best at the STRIP w/ the 1000 CFM carb... Mine is a street/strip car..... More Strip than street I guess, since I drive it on the weekends at the strip... but I drive to and from the strip too.... I like the 850 Double Pumper for all around driving, but I probably drive 500 miles a year.... That's just my .02cents...

Hello

A friend has a nice 440 in his ยด69 Charger. He has tested both the 850 double pumper and a massaged 750 vacuum carbs. Both are Holley, and he likes the 850 dp more.

The combo: 440 + 0.030", around 10.5:1 comp, MP272 hyd.cam, stock 906 heads, RPM intake, MSD ignition, headers, 2500 stall, manual valvebody TF727, 3.54:1 gears. This daily driven heavy Charger gets high 13:s on a strip with radial tires = no traction.

Just my 2 cents, - BB 70 Challenger

With a ThermoQuad, I'd say get the big one, either 850 or 1000, the Holley - 750 and the Edelbrock - 800.
