Engine start-up
It's possible that i might be able to fire off my 340 this weekend. The motor was currently running in another car for a few thousand miles. The oil was drained when it was removed, and it has sat for a few months. Do I need to prime the engine before starting it? Or just fill it with oil and go?

I just fired off and broke in my 340 after a rebuild and tried a few times to get it going. I was told (and it seemed to be true), that once its been fired for a minute or so and the RPMs have been up to 2000 at least the oil passages in the block fill and even if you drain the oil pan, the oil stays in the passages.
I was concerned as well. I thought I had to prime it each time I tried to start it. The first time I added oil I put in ~6 qts, and its only suppose to take 5.... Then after break in I drained it and changed the oil and filter, and at that point it would only take 5 qts. So that other qt or so was still in the engine. To make a short story long......no you don't need to prime the motor, its already broke in. But it wouldn't hurt to get some oil up top, if you have the distributor out. Good luck....bring it back to life. |

Your best bet is to pull the spark plugs and disconnect the coil then crank it for 30 seconds,do this 3-4 times, that'll build oil pressure w/o much load on the crank and rod bearings......PRO..
