I think my 74 727 needs some internal attention, to what extent I'm not sure.
Symptoms: Slippage noted from dead stop (also some type of vibration at times) 1-2 shift seems firm, 2-3 no firm at all. Sometimes if I don't engage "reverse" before "park" the car will continue to roll/move (as if in neutral)while in "park". I have changed the trans fluid initially (brown/black color) and the filter. The car has been driven approx 700 miles since and the tranny fluid is still pink (at least on the dipstick) Is this something a novice (not a mechanic by trade but like getting dirty, and hopefully saving a buck or two) can/should try to tackle? For some reason auto's seem intimidating. If so, is there a recomended rebuild kit, tech manuals? If I can and do go this route what should be done to beef it up some (valve body/converter, ect..) Appreciate any input on the subject.

I have rebuilt 4 727's so far, and they all worked good.
I got a transmission manual its absolutly nessary to have this or dont do it.
All the tranys i rebuilt have had torn clutch pack seals resulting in problems similar to yours.
There a lot of parts in a trany,so what I do is put the parts on the bench in a line in the order they came out of the transmission, this really helps when its time toput it back together. You will a puller, press, dial caliper, or some other tools to do this properley.
Good luck

Is there a specific manual I will need? Does mopar make one or is there a chilton/haynes or some other aftermarket reference that is sufficient? How long would you estimate this procedure would take a first-timer, not including trans removal/installation? The car isn't a daily driver so not in a rush.
Tks,
Rob

I have a 69 dodge service manual, it covers transmissions and a lot more
Year One sells repro reprints for $45
there are several years available
The first time you do a rebuild you will most likly spend as much money on the parts and tools that you could buy a rebuilt one

With that thought, I may be better off to leave to someone else. If the job is done right it should last for some time. Tks for the info.
