Hate to post yet another "How do I get more performance out of my ....?", but I will anyway!
I've got a '96 318 Dakota that I'm considering tinkering with a bit. I see from the messages already posted that people like the Mopar performance computer (sounds pretty pricey), headers (a distinct possibility) and Jacobs ignitions (never heard of Jacobs before.) I came to this board looking for info/opinions on the Accel 300+ ignition system. Anyone know anything about it? What kind of cash should I expect to spend on a new computer or headers/exhaust? I want to order the Mopar catalog, but $15 seems pretty insulting. Maybe I'll break down. Do they apply the $15 towards a purchase? Thanks in advance!! |

I warmed up a 318 motor on my 95 Ram with good results. The items with the most noticable performance increases were a K&N air filter, a cat back exhaust (Borla), and the Mopar High performance engine controller.
I also added a Jacobs ignition and JBA headers but did not notice any advantage with them. Thats not to say they did not help, its just that I did not get a kick in the pants when I opened the throttle. I'm sure they added horsepower, but may have been at high engine speeds. If the catalog your talking about is the Mopar performance parts catalog why don't you join the Mopar Performance Race Team? It's only $18 a year and you get the MP catalog and a great magazine plus some other goodies from Mopar. Many people have had very good luck with the MSD ignitions, the 6al is the one most people use, or at least the 6a. AI dont know if I would trust the Jacobs, i personally know too many people who have had trouble with them, even though they look to be of good quality, and have good layouts and add ons (as well as very interesting items included with some such as the micro switch to tell the unit when you are at full throttle so it can apply more voltage to the ignition), but Im going to go with the MSD... it works!
