I am restoring a 71 plymouth duster and I would like to put a 300hp 360 crate in it. i would like to know is how well these engines perform and are they worth the money. I know that there are cheeper ways to go, but I am not really looking for bang for my buck. do these engines hold up well or are they crap? thanks for the info

I would say talk to Dartman360. He's got a 380 h.p. 360 crate in his Dart hdtp that runs the track. He should be able to give you plenty. If you would like to go cheaper, I got 330h.p. out of my 318 for less than $500.

Mine currently is pretty basic with a PAW .454 cam, 360 heads, Performer intake and 600 cfm carb. Hedman headers and dual 2 1/2" exhaust with crossover. Take a look at the website in my signature to see the complete story on my Duster. Send pics if you want to post on my "Projects" page. Love to have more rides in there!

I could not say anything bad about our crate motor. Pay the extra 500 bucks and get the 380hp. We were kinda nervous cause we have alwise build our own motors. But have about 2,000 street miles and 158 passes on it. Gas millage is around 14 with 4.56's out back. I would recomd it to anyone. However I would not recmond the new stroker crate out from Mopar. I think it is a big waste of money. Our car weighs 3310 with full interior and all metal on car. Best to date is a 12.46 and constant low 12.50's. Hopefully once things get rolling at the shop we hope to start building some of our own crate style motors. Let me know if you want any info on the 360 crate from mopar.

I think the crate 360s are way over priced.
You can build a 400 hp 360 for less than the 380 costs... Mopar Perf. 10 to 1 short block ($1200) Edelbrock Heads ($1270) M1 Intake ($200) Holley 800 CFM ($300) Stock Valvetrain Stock ignition (electronic) Headers Away you go... I know PRO can build you a better combo for the same money... |

Your right that you might be able to build the same motor for alot less but what if you have nothing to start with? Also dont know alot about doing one and just want to pick up the phone and have it come complete to your door. Just add carb. 1200 for the heads is a little low. Stock Edelbrock heads are junk so figure more like 1500 or even a lil more. And I dont know about using the stock old hardware also. I can get the 360/380 for 3499 shipped to our door. I dont think you could really come close to that price if you were starting from nothing. Unless you can get the machine work done cheap and you really watch your budget. Now I would agree from what I have heard about the new 408 strocker crate it way overly priced.

The stock Edelbrock heads are not "junk". They flow 250 on the intake side right out of the box. They are priced to beat the heads that Mopar Performance sells and they are aluminum.
Hughes Engines thinks they need work out of the box, but Hughes is in the business of porting heads so how objective are they? Does a 1964 Valiant with a 10 to 1 360, Edelbrocks (stock), 3.23s and a 4 speed turning 12.53 in the quarter (at 5500 ft.) sound like junk to you? Not to me.... By the way, you can easily build a 360 without "sutff". You don't need a core for the 360 that MP sells and you don't need a core for the Edelbrocks either. All you need to round up is the remaining stuff.... |

I have seen first hand the results of these heads box stock from 2 different local machine shops. No 2 ports flowed the same. Maybe Pro got lucky. The motor it self was not junk. I realize what he runs and respect him for that. But when I see them flow what the flowed and it was no where new the 250cfm for what they say the flow their is a problem. I just think it would be hard to build the same motor for 3500 and start from nothing. Also one thing is that the few problems pro has had and the fact that everything is new in the magnum crate motors. Nothing wrong with used stuff but new is still better. And I have not heard one thing bad about the 360 crates.

The main problem with the crate 360 is the PRICE. That motor is overpriced by about $1000.

Edelbrock.....yuk!!!!
I've seen some Edelbrock heads flowed and they were all over the place. Some ports weren't even within 15% of each other. I think you would be hard pressed to put together a motor(from scratch) as inexpensively as a crate motor. Unless you know someone, machine work can eat up your costs.

Hey DartMan360, why do you think the stroker crate motor is junk. I was thinking about one of those or maybe the new 395 HP motor with the aluminum heads. The stroker is a little pricey, but otherwise seems ok.

The motor it self isnt junk. The thing I dont like is the price. 5000 is a little to much. I priced everything a couple of months ago to build a 417 stroker from a 340 that would make somewhere around 550-600hp. Came out at just under 6000 with the Ported Edelbrocks and everything. Now they want 5000 for a 435hp motor or so that is the best answer I got for price wise. Other than that I have seen no specs on this. Like I said before. Once things get rolling at the shop we are going to start making our own crate motors but where you can option them out. And they will be an resonable price.
