Is $200 for 302 heads reasonable?
I came across a set of 1991 302 heads in a 318 Dodge truck today. Would $200 be a fair price for them? The truck belonged to a roofing company and had a big tool rack bolted on top, so I can guess the engine was never beat hard, but it has 228,000 miles on it. And the junkyard operator says he won't sell only the heads. $200 for the whole thing or nothing. Of course, I'll only take the heads and maybe the exhaust manifolds, but he wants $200 no matter what. What's the chances of them being cracked? I know it'll need valve guides, and I'm ok with that part.

$200 for a 200,000 mile plus 318 motor from a truck is too high. 302 heads go for $75 to $100 a pair at most, they started making the "302" heads in 1985 (any '85-'91 roller cam engine had "302" heads). Tons of these heads are on 5th ave. cars from 1985-89 plus trucks and vans. Now not all '85 motors were roller cam motors, some were not (and won't have "302" heads). I would't pay that much. Even the more sought after 360 "308" heads are cheaper than that. I guess it depends on how bad you want them. Will they guarantee they are not cracked? If so, go straight from the yard to a machine shop, drop them off to get magnafluxed for cracks.

Yeah. I'm not going to get them. I'd rather have 308 heads anyhow. Just thought I'd ask to see if they're in higher demand than I thought. I've looked at several 318's from '85-'88, and NONE of them had 302 casting number heads on them. It was always some other casting number.

One of the weak points on SB heads is right in the middle of the head casting. If you see any antifreeze staining on the block uder the middle of the heads you can be sure the head is cracked. They are weak in that area and I have seen many this way in the boneyard.

I can't believe you've seen none with that set of heads.. I have 2 sets downstairs right now. part number is something like 4323302...the ones off my dead 318 (an 87 block, which would have come from an 88) had a crack at one of the valves, which wasn't noticeable at all until I did the valve job and saw hte hairline. Got another set dirt cheap.

Tim go to your local auto parts and order them for 150 each already redone and bolt them on .I can get magnum heads from middleton auto salvage all reconditioned for 150 each 1.92 intake and 1.60 exhaust valves i'll port them out and they will run like w_2's . I can't come close to that price from the bone yard and and all the machining valves guides springs ext......

I found a set today!!! I went to a junkyard where the guy always gives me good deals, and pulled a valve cover off an '87 318 in a Diplomat. 302 heads ! 102,000 miles on them. I'm sure I can get them for under $50, but I'll have to pull them off myself. The car is buried behind several rows of other cars, so there's no chance of getting the cutting torch back there. Getting those exhaust manifolds out of the way will not be fun.
I still think some ported 360 heads would run better on a mild 318, but maybe I'll try these. Can anyone compare the good and bad points of each head? Aside from the compression difference. |

Hate to burst your bubble but in 1991 they didn't make 302 casting heads, now if by chance thats a 360 it will have the 308 casting heads and for that money if they are not cracked between the valves in the seats you had better jump all over them, they will put an X head to shame.
