Default Firestone F60 Wide ovals Collectible or road hazard? Opinions please

A got a set of F 60 Wide Ovals off a co-worker that said they are from 1980, give or take a year. They are in great condition no cracking and have about 12-13/32" of thread on them. I don't want them for my 440 Six Pack Swinger, as I'm sure they wouldn't be sticky enough. Do you think they would be good for a more tammer car or are they time bombs roadhazards?

Almost any of the bias ply tires are useless by todays standards. The do have better sidewall rigidity, but thats about it. I got rid of mine after an impropto doughnut on a hiway on ramp that was wet. Save the wide ovals for the resto's and get a decent set of radials for driving.

My experience with older tires that look almost new is the tread will probably seperate fairly fast. I put new tires on my Duster just before I stored it in my garage for 15 years. After I restored it the tires seperated within a couple of weeks of local driving.

When new, they had 11/32s of tread depth. Has he maybe got recaps?

Doug how could you tell if they were re-caps? Also Anybody what kind of a resto would they be good for?

To tell if they are recaps, even a very good one will have some slight buffer marks where the tread wraps around to meet the sidewall. It could look like curb scuffing.

If you want to use them on a resto, I'd only ptu the wheels with those tires on when you were at a show.

To identify the car, are they 14s or 15s? Also, I doubt if they are that new - more like mid-70s.

Read everything that the sidewall has printed on it, let me know what it says, and maybe I can help you with what cars they were OE on.

Hi Doug! Besides the usual size and tread information, the DOT # is VLUD DA1155 another tag has A23B and by the bead in small print is; made in Canada 5 UR BD-55709. I like the idea of somebody bolting them on for shows only. I feel that it would be a waste to just toss them in a dumpster, so I was thinking of E-bay if they are a factory original size for a certain car. If that doesn't work maybe I could mount them on the Swinger for a couple days of "ultimate' smoke shows.

Here are some that I know for sure came with these tires: Late '60s and early '70s Corvettes, '69 and '70 Z-28s, '68, '69, and '70 Firebird Trans Ams, '69 and '70 Boss 302 Mustangs. As far as I can determine, no MOPARs muscle cars ever came from the factory with these, just Goodyears, but I could be wrong. Also, most of those cars might have been delivered with the same size Goodyears. I'm pretty sure that 'Vettes only came from the factory with Firestones.

Hope this helped some.
