Question

Hey, can any of you wise folks out there tell me anything about the 4-spd automatic in my '99 Cherokee sport? Mainly who makes it, what are the ratios and has anyone had good or bad expieriences with them? The window sticker says it's japanese. I thought I was pretty up-to-date on mopar tranies, but apparently that's not the case! Seems to perform quite well, better than expected anyway. Also, is there any way to make it stay in 4th during w.o.t. top-speed conditions?

Thanks in advance for your time and help!

It is made for Chrysler by the Asian-Warner Transmission company. It is called the AW-4.This is a extremly good trans.I have one in my wife's 93 Cherokee and it has 110,000 miles on it and the pan has never been pulled.I do however, and I've done this since it was new,is to change the trans fluid every 15,000 miles. The AW-4 has a drain plug to make it easy.DO NOT use anything except Dexron-3 trans fluids. No synthetics either. This is a very reliable transmission and will give long life if taken care of.I don't know the gear ratios.

Thanks Christopher, 110k huh? sounds good to me. I allways change ATF between 10k and 12k, depending on the vehicle and the use. So as long as it's a quality trans, longevity should'nt be a prob. BTW appreciate the speedy response!

One other thing I forgot was that in all the years I worked at a Chrysler/Jeep dealer,we had ZERO problems with the AW-4.Like I said,I really belive in fluid changes,I feel it's cheap insurance.BTW,the only things I have done to the wife's Cherokee is 1 set of front brake pads,2 sets of tires,a water pump at 100K,cap rotor and wires at 80K and 2 sets of spark plugs, the first set changed at 30K and the second set went in at 100K.Serpentine belt was changed at the same time as water pump. But that and the fluid/filter changes is all I have done.Hope you enjoy your new Jeep.
