Question 904 and 727 Gearing

Are the gear ratios exactly the same in both of these transmissions?

The 2 tranny's have different ratios. I race the 904, and there are a couple of different 1st gear ratios. I have been told that there are 2 second gear ratios, but no one has ever been able to tell me what it is.

Lightbulb Which is better?

Let me jump in and ask which transmission is better. I always thought the 727 was tougher than a 904. What do you think 9dodge?

I race both the 727 with a 2.45 first gear. The 727 has a larger dia. shell, gearing and clutch packs making for more rotating mass than a 904 family trans. I use the 999 as my main trans with the 2.74 gear and the 1.54 second with 5 disc clutch pack. The 999 is a member of the 904 family with the five disc clucth. The trans comes with the 2.45 or the 2.74 ratio's. For racing stay away from the lock-up converter transmissions. Look for two sets of wires going in the trans. one for back-up/ neutral the other for lock up.

Thats It, For What I Think, I Know!

On our 904 we take 1st gear clutch plate and stack them in the second gear. This gives us more plates for holding power, the 1st gear plates are thinner so you can put more in the second gear. We wire the kick down and wire it open, this gives us a late 1-2 shift but it is very firm. We run all of our short tracks, 1/4 and 3/8 in second and our half miles in 3rd. With our tranny run like this we have had no trans problems. We can run the 727 or 904, we chose the 904, because of the lighter rotating mass and less weight. Our motors only put out about 300 horse so no big deal.
