Question Shorty headers for an A body

I've heard about using "shorty" headers for small block A bodies, and would like to try them because full size headers would take up too much room and cause clearance problems. Has anyone ever used them? How do they compare power-wise to regular headers? What is a good brand and model number to get, or a website? I've heard shorty headers are better than manifolds but don't make as much power as regular headers.

A shorty header in general will have a higher tuned RPM, so your low-RPM power will suffer compared to long-tube headers. However, if you make the secondary pipe (the one between the collector and your muffler) the correct length you can compensate for much of your power loss. The latest Circle Track magazine has a pretty good article on exhaust technology, read it if you can get your hands on it.

A shorter pipe has a higher resonant frequency; cutting the length in half doubles the resonant frequency. Just like a shorter guitar string (because your finger is on it) has a higher pitch than a longer string (without your finger on it). Another good example is the trombone, lengthening the slide makes it play a lower note. This is because the pressure waves move at a constant speed (the speed of sound), and the longer the pipe is the longer it takes the wave to go from end to end. The time it takes for the wave to bounce from one end of the pipe to the other is the period of the wave, and 1/period is the frequency.

if the sound waves in the trombone were moving at the speed of sound wouldnt it cause a sonic boom and blow the trombone off the lips of the person playing it......LOL
