Anyone have problems with Muscle Motors?
I bought an Indy 440-1 head kit from them, picked it up on Friday. The first thing I noticed is that they sent the wrong valve covers,no big deal, I'll just send them back for the right ones. As I looked further into what was sent, I noticed that there was no instructions for installing the heads, rocker arms, or oil line kit. Again,no big deal, I'll just have them send me the instructions.
Well, prior to ordering the heads, I was told that they use Ferrea Competition Plus valves exculsively,so I was happy with that. I also ordered the heads with .720" lift Isky valve springs for a solid roller cam. Today I was looking at the heads closer and noticed that it has REV valves in it,not Ferrea valves. It has REV printed on the valve stem tips. Also, a few of the valve tips on one head have what look like small grind marks on the chamfer of the tip, nothing major but still nothing I'd like to have on a serious motor. Next, I looked at the valve springs. The outer springs have a single orange stripe, the inner ones are natural. The sheet supplied with the heads show these as part number 9005. Isky's website shows these springs have a max lift of .650", which I confirmed after doing the math regarding coil bind, installed height, ect. So,this is another fly in the ointment. I emailed Mike at MM telling him what is up with the head kit. Has anyone else out there had good luck with MM when it comes to problems with their products? I just hope I'm not going to be stuck with these heads, I have too much invested in them. I just want them to be fit with the parts I originally asked for. Thanks for your reply, just needed to vent some. Rob |

I have been dealing with them and I assume they will correct your problems. They are very busy and may have a hard time keeping up with things at the moment. They have always been very helpful and are about the best to give answers to my stupid questions. No problem with the products I have bought from them that should be judged as their cause.

I got my stroker short block from them and they were good to deal with, but it took them over 3-months to build the engine (twice, the first block did not clean-up with the 0.020" overbore), the shipping pallet the engine was on broke getting some wood chips in the engine (shipped in plastic, but with out an oil pan), and the threds on the 1/2" oil pickup needed to be tapped deeper (I have heard this complaint about the 1/2" threded oil passege of a few different muscle motors engines?)
I got my cylinder heads from Koffels Place. They were also very good to deal with, but also slow on delevering the heads, but this was when the heads first came out and they had quite a backlog. |

C & A drop shipped the wrong rings for my 416 stroker kit. The machine shop had started building the short block so they picked up some rings locally to keep the project moving. I emailed Mike. He apologized for the mishap and said that MM would refund the price for the ring set, but they had to receive them back at their shop first. I was out a couple of bucks for shipping, but no big deal. Give Mike a chance to make things right.

We have purchased several engines from MM over the years. We also have MM freshen them when necessary. We have had no problems. I know they will make things right if they make a mistake.

Mike from MM emailed me back, saying he would send a call tag for the heads and the valve covers if I wanted them to be corrected. I let him know that I'll run the REV valves and keep the plain valve covers, they've kind grown on me,lol. He has been good to deal with and I have nothing bad to say about him at all. He also told me that the heads have Comp Cams 944 valve springs, instead of the Isky 9005 springs I thought they had on them. Thanks for the replies, I really appreciate an open ear when I need to vent or get opinions.

Okay, here we go. The block is a hard block filled 440 bored .030 over with aluminum main caps, a Mopar Performance 4.150 crank, Eagle rods, Ross Pistons, Indy SR heads ported by MM, compression about 14:1, port matched Indy 4500 intake manifold, 1150 Dominator, Isky roller cam with .660 max lift with 1.5 roller rockers, dynoed 742 HP at 6500 RPM with 2 1/8 tube headers with a 3 1/2 inch collector. The engine installed in a 68 Road Runner weighing 3400 lbs with driver runs high nines at 135 MPH. The car is backhalved with ladder bars. Tires are 14 x 31 Goodyears. Rear gear is a 4.56 in a Dana. Turbo Action transbrake with a 5000 rpm stall converter. Sixty foots are high 1.30's to low 1.40's depending upon weather and track conditions launching off the transbrake at 3200 rpms. That's the highlights.

Thanks! Your turning some decent #s with a relatively modest investment. It goes to show you what you can do with some good heads, cam, and compression.
