Question Main Bearing Torque Specs?

I am planning to replace the main bearings in my 318 (1970 Challenger) due to low oil pressure (30psi at startup and 0 within 10-15 minutes). This is my first project and I have not forked over the $$$$$ for the factory repair manuals yet. Can anyone tell me what torque specs should be after I install the bearings?

Thanks for the help.

I will be installing a highvolume oil pump while im down there. The motor is still in so all work will be done under the car. Is there anything I need to check or change while Im in there?

Again, thanks so much

Chris

Manual says 85 ft lbs. Pull a couple of random rod caps and check the bearings there too. They torque at 45 ft lbs. Make sure your sump screen is clean.

Default thanks, jelsr and 6pakman

jelsr, thanks for the info.
Sump screen was FULL of carbon!
you think i should replace the sump or just clean it good in a parts washer?

6pakman, what is and where can I find a "plasti gage"?
sounds like this check could save me over $150.00 and no telling how much time!

Thanks to you both!

Plasti-gauge can be bought at any REAL parts store, it's like play dough. You slip it between the cap and crank, tork it down, remove it and measure the thickness, this will tell you what size bearing to use +.010 or +.020, etc., they are also available in X sizes if you want to get real accurate.

Check your spec sheet, I believe they will ask you to have about .0025 to .0028 clearance on the mains, but I'm not the one to ask on stock spec's....I've never built a stock motor

I've got a '77 service manual and it says

"Maximum allowable Connecting rod bearing clearence - .003 inch"

"Main bearing Clearence - desired .00005"-.0015"
Max. allowable .0025"

Connecting rod torque - 45 ft lbs

Main bearing torque - 85 ft lbs

I'd replace the oil pump pickup. And the oil pump. Clean out the oil pan really good, till it looks like shinny new metal.

Oh the oil pump bolts torque - 30 ft lbs.

Default cuda273 and JVMopar, thanks

cuda66273,
Never built one to specs? THATS GREAT! If this were your 1970 plain jane Challenger. 2bbl, 318, ac that may just need to be refreshed, 904 trans , 8.25 rearend 2.73 geared, PLAIN JANE Challenger, and you wanted to use it street/strip, how would you go about it?
and thanks for the loads of time you must spend on this board!

JVMopar,
Thanks for the specs. - I broke down and ordered the manual today, $60.00. Dont tell me if I got ripped! Do you own a '77?

I don't think I would.....figure out how much your going to spend, the time involved and what the end result will be. Then go buy a rebuilt 360 long block, you'll be way ahead.

Unless you have a reason to mess with a 318 your better off with the 360.

Around here you can pick up a 360 Long Block for around $800.00 where you are they should be even cheaper.

Why do I run a 318?
Someone said you can't....that was all it took.

I've got a '73 Dodge pickup. And scrounging around school here I found a '77 Dodge trucks manual. Basically the same truck, just less emissions stuff. I can't tell you if you got ripped or not, I got mine for free.
