Default CD Changer Question

I recently purchased a 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 Quad. The factory stereo has cd changer controls. When I was at the local car stereo store I was looking into purchasing a CD changer. The salesman informed me I wouldn't be able to use a aftermarket changer with my factory stereo. I would either have to buy an aftermarket reciever and changer or purchuse the factory changer. Is this true? Seems to me there would be an adapter kit or something.

Check Crutchfield.com, they carry some CD changers that connect directly to certain factory head units. Also U should check this point out with some of the better car audio installers in your area. Back a few years U could get the aftermarket CD changer for $200 from a car audio installer or pay $750 for the same CD changer from the new car dealer. Now there are several companies that supply CD changer adapters that permit direct connection of some CD changers for certain cars. So the CD chnager may be $250 and the adapter $50.

Its kind of a hit or miss, however keep in mind that Pioneer makes a direct install head unit that bolts into a Dodge, no kits required. I have installed one into my Dakota along with a 12 CD changer in the console, and the whole cost $ was less than $500... Took only about 1 1/2 hours to install..

If more questions, post and we will try to respond...

They do make adapter kits for the 2002's.I've installed some Kenwood 6 disc's into some Chrysler cars for dealers. The Kenwood CD changers go for about $180.00 and the P.I.E. adapters go for $75.00.

I think P.I.E. makes adapters for Kenwood,Sony, and Alpine cd changers for the 2002's.There are some other company's that make them, this is just what I have experenced.

Thanks for all the good info. Now that I have been researching it I am leaning more toward getting an MP3 player. Thanks again for all the info though.
