small block heads
Does anyone know if 318 and 360 heads are interchangeable? I want to do a serious port job on my heads on my 360 but I dont want to have the truck down the whole time I'm waiting on the machine shop. I have a spare set of 318 heads and I was wondering if I could send those out to the machine shop and then just swap them out when I get them back.

You can use 318 heads on a 360 but if you're after some extra grunt I would advise against it, look at a set of 318 heads next to a set of 360 heads & you'll see why, there is quite a big difference between the 318 & 360 intake runner sizes.
I've ported plenty of 318 & 360 heads with flow testing. A fairly major porting job I've done on some 318 heads netted 200 cfm @ .600 lift which equals about 411 HP of flow. A standard 360 head flows about 196 cfm which is about 403 HP of flow, so for all the work you do on the 318 head it's barely doing better than the standard 360 head. I would guesstimate that the 318 heads would run out of puff at about 4,500 - 5,000 rpm on a 360. |

thanks
Thanks for the input. This engne is in a 4x4 so I need maximum torque at low rpm. It sounds like 318 heads are bad idea all around. I will just have to let the truck set until the 360 heads come back from the shop and I can put them back on.
