Just got home from a 4.7 engine class & the instructor showed me a copy of a memo stating that a new TSB for spark knock will be arriving soon :d (no date yet) From what I read, It will be a "flash" reprogram to retard the timing to stop the knock if the intake is not leaking or allready has been repaired. Just some info for ya.

Retarding the timing is a good solution, but from the tests that I ran on several Dakota's ('97 - '99), the timing curve is at the full 40 degrees advance before 2300 rpm. This is just stupid in my opinion and is asking for "pinging" problems. All they (DC) need to do is modify the current timing curve to allow the full advance to come in a little bit later (around 2800-2900 rpm). Also, I noticed that the sensor delays are set too slow. It takes almost a second for the timing to drop from 40 degrees to 19 on a WOT "stab". Massive pinging occurs at this stage even with 93 octane fuel. Check out the stats if you want: http://lonestar.texas.net/~bernd/DakotaPingReport.htm Regards, Bernd D. Ratsch |
