Tranny gave up... whats your take?
Well for a few days when i would take off it sounded like a spring would pop. Then yesterday just cruising about 35 it started clicking... click click click click click and I immediately pulled over and took a look at it, added a little fluid to top it off (it was within limits). Slowly started driving home about 3 mph for about a mile. Accidently gave it a little to much gas at one point and it slipped out of gear and wouldnt go back in. Added just a little more fluid and let it set for about 20 minutes and still wouldnt go in gear. Gave it bout 3/4 throttle in gear and it caught and i finally made it home clicking all the way. The clicking sound actually sounded more like springs constantly popping the more i listened to it. Didnt bother to check if it went in reverse. Any ideas? I'd imagine rebuild time unless this could be an easy fix.

a clicking sound makes me think something to do with park was screwed up. the 3/4 throttle thing makes me think you have fluid, but not the pressure or clutches to make it work right.
just a guess, but when you pull the pan off of the tranny, you are going to have a handful of metal shavings that were sucked up to the filter (causing the low pressure) metal shavings from the clicking sound. my $10 goes on a tranny rebuild. |

A 929 ?!?!?! No such thing. 727, yes, 904/998/999, probably, but there are no 929's out there.
If the parking lock thing is correct, it would've had to have the E-clip come off or break, thus allowing the linkage rod to fall out and maybe get pushed back while you shifted gears. Did you have Park when you got home? I think there's metal shavings from something in the pan and filter, or something clogging the filter. |

woops again
904... dont know what i was thinking at the time.. been a long day. Gonna play with it more in the morning but i dont trust driving it anymore. All I tried was forword gears in the heat of the moment. It stopped in the middle of highway at a stop sign with 10 cars behind me. Just glad i made it home. It is in park and holding now though. Park did work...

Have you been doing neutral drops?? How about smokie burn-outs?
It may be the sprag , which is mounted in the very back of the case. Will it go if you put it in manual low? If so, it's the sprag and time for a rebiuld or replacement. fox |

Get out your snap ring pliers...LOL No Big deal we rebuild those 727/904's on the bench at home..wash 'em out with soap and water in the doggy wash tub, blow dry and reassemble..about 3 hours. I would guess a couple of hard parts may be needed here....sprag, maybe the servo piston and you'll probably want to swap out the pump if any metal went through it. Be sure and mark the clock position on the pump to case. We made up a couple of studs to align the front pump up, about 75 cents worth of bolts or you can buy the real tools for about $20...we're cheap and always use personal labor over cash. Yesterday we had to put new upper ball joints in the Cuda, a ball joint socket was $40, so we made one out of some tubing and scrap iron, not pretty but it worked great. I'll take a pic and post it if anyone's interested? |

Sorry about the quality I couldn't find my adaptor for my digital camera and used my movie camera to take these stills, but you'll get the idea.

Finally an overall view.
See why I never throw away any small pieces of tube or any other steel....just keep all those odds and ends in a wooden box in the corner of the carport. Saved me $40 yesterday and....none were available from local sources I would have had to wait until today to get one down from Seattle. |

from the way you talk it doesnt sound like that hard to rebuild at home. I've never tackled the tranny before besides fluid filter change. I dont mind spending time with it because i have a truck to get around in. Do you recommend a book or anything? I've got plenty of room and time to spred this out. Digital camera by my side too.
