It's not rocket science, but you absolutely will need a manual if you've never done it before.

The set up is the main problem. If your patient, and follow the procedures in the manual( to interpret the paterns and move the gears appropriately to correct problems) you should be ok.

The main special tools you'll need are, a dial indicator for checking the backlash and a press for R & R of the brgs. The kit should come with the dye for checking the contact pattern.

If your up to it(after reading the book first) I'd still get someone to check it when your done. Even a lot of mechanics have trouble with this sort of work, and the new set won't live if it's not done right.

How about a vise to hold the yoke while you are trying to break a 250 ft/lb 1-1/8 inch nut? I found if you are close to breaking the vise off your bench with your 3 foot breaker bar on the nut, put the pig on the floor and put an axle into the left hand side to hold the pig steady while you stand on the breaker bar. You may want to get an inch .lb wrench to get the preload correct with the shims involved. There are a number of press adapters needed the get the bearings off and on.

I was quoted 100 bucks from an old man working at a RV repair place, man that sounds cheap now. This was 5 years ago and I was to give him all the new parts.

I would think about 2 to 3 hours at local shop rate is about right. Maybe some press charges on top of that. In Canada here, that would be about $200. Current exchange? I don't know.

If your comfortable doing it yourself, then do it. A factory service manual is a must though. I just set up my own gears (489 case), everyone was telling me how hard it was going to be, but it was really easy actually, just TAKE YOUR TIME, and check and re check clearences. Haven't driven the car yet, but there should be no noises, all the clearences were right on. After doing it yourself, the prices to set them up seem even more ridiculous.
Good Luck
