Biggrin 360 heads #

OK.,
Here is the casting number of the heads of the 360 I yanked out of a '74 (so they told me) van

3769974

What is the chamber CC of these heads?
What is it's application?
Truck? Car?

"974" heads are approximately 72 cc but can be a little more. They were used on both cars and trucks with 360s, they have hardened exhaust seats for unleaded fuel. If off a truck motor, they (probably) will have exhaust valve "rotater" retainers (look different than the intake retainers).

Default '974 heads

sorry I'm late/slow but the 974 heads are 1975 castings and my set cc'd out at 68 cc with stock valve seats.

Cool Heads will be stockers

My target CR be around 9:1 or a little lower. What the summit catalog said was 8.8:1 with the Federal Mogul pistons (sterling) hypertec pistons. That was assuming a 68cc chamber volume.
That is about where I want to be for this heavy truck.

I would double check the heads, never assume anything. I have measured many small block 340-360 heads and they average 71-72cc. Some of the early X heads will run 69-70cc. Late 1970's and 1980's will go 74cc or more. If you have them shaved up to get a nice flat surface, you will reduce the volume pretty quick. For each .0048" removed from the surface, there will be 1 cc removed from the chamber.

Angry ULTIMATE BAD NEWS!!!!!!

Just got a phone call from the machine shop.
Both heads are cracked in the exhaust seats!!!!

AAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!
I have to buy heads now and I cannot afford too much. I already had to put a crank kit in this thing that I couldn't afford.
I got a quote from AutoZone for $124 per head.
Since these will be 'refurbished heads' they will probably be milled. I will definately have to get these CCed.
